Which anti virus (preferably free) works best with windows7 x64. Presently using avast free but boot time scanner does not work in 64bit systems.

I use Avira AntiVir @ work and home and it's very good. Google "Avira vs" and you will find that it's among the best antivurus solutions, and it's free. Although it's only available in 32-bit, it runs fine in x64 OS.

My recommendation would be Microsoft Security Essentials or Kaspersky Internet Security.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials and am very satisfied with it. MSE recently blocked a trojan, when an infected USB stick was inserted with no infection of the system. I work on Windows 7 x64 and MSE doesn't seem to slow down anything. When I use Spybot for an additional check, it only finds some cookies, not more. For a free AV solution MSE does an excellent job.

I use to be die hard Avira guy. I did at least 10 hours of research on best AV last year and Avira was tops.

However, I've been using MSE for past several months and I like it better. The issue with Avira is that there are many false positives which is quite annoying.

I prefer ESET NOD32, because it's reliable and doesn't slow down my computer :)

Just cause it didn't notify you doesn't mean the definition file had it flagged meaning you might have had it but didn't know it cause it wasn't detected

I use avira free and malwarebytes and once in a while it finds something. But never had problems with comp so far
