Tested the backup speed for three imagers (all boot cd, and cold image): Acronis TI 2015, IFL v2.93 and Shadow Protect v5.2.4. File system is NTFS, UEFI Windows 8.1 Enterprise X64 of on a 128GB SSD. Used space on the SSD is 21.8GB. Have a 2nd HDD in the same computer as a storage drive. The test was to image the whole SSD OS drive, and saved the images to the HDD drive. In all three programs, default parameters are used. The only options I changed were the compression level: for Acronis and SP, used high compression; for IFL, used enhanced size - A. The resulting images are almost the same size: Acronis image: 11.6GB, IFL image 11.7GB and SP image 12.4 GB. The most significant difference is the time used: Acronis only needed 1.7 min, SP 3.2min, and IFL 5.1min. The speed of Acronis is just too impressive. I know it was fast before, but did not realize it's so much faster than other imagers. Despite ppl reported bugs in Acronis 2015 version, I have been using Acronis for more than 10 years and never had any problems. Granted, I only use the boot CD and image from outside of Windows. Looks like Acronis and SP would be my imager of choice for Windows system in a while.
Be interesting to see if SP correctly resets the MountedDevices registry key when restoring to a different drive/partition. I never had a problem with this with TI but I think I did with EaseUSToDo Backup and maybe Macrium Reflect. I always liked Ghost for the fact that I could create two batch files, one to backup and one to restore, so that my brother could just boot from a custom built ISO (via USB or grub4dos) and just type "backup" or "restore" to run the job. With complicated interfaces to navigate, there's too much risk of him not understanding and doing something wrong that screws up his system. Whilst I can create automated backup jobs in Windows with Macrium, etc, when it comes to restoring a non-working system, he'll have to boot an ISO and thus I can't TeamViewer in and help him and the best I can do is boot the ISO as well (in Virtualbox) and talk him through everything, which can be painful! I guess the answer is to create a PE with TeamViewer included so that he can boot to that and then I can take over.
Thanks for that. I've been using an old version Q1 2010 mainly to reset hal for migrating. Have not used it on any modern OS. Worked fine upto svr 2008... With the Shadow Protect Software you should be able to do Bare Metal restores...
