People are simply disliking metro ui....its not so bad though....frankly i too was uncomfortable in the beginning....but using it for around 20 minutes...things became clear...i understand the learning curve takes time....and one loves familiar stuff...but this too (metro ui) is not so bad...very customizable. Here are a few tips for getting the familiar feel in a alien environment: 1.For those who want normal desktop, click on the desktop app and u r done... 2. For those whowant something similar to start menu....use Win+X (i.e. Windows Key + X) and u have many options of the start menu present there 3.Another way of getting the start menu : take ur mouse pointer to the bottom left corner of the screen (corner is very imp.) and right click....done 4.Even in metro...right clicking unveils much functionality and customizability... 5.To close opened metro apps (even the desktop is an app in metro)....take mouse pointer to the top edge of the screen...it will change into a hand shaped pointer.. drag down the hand shaped pointer...and that closes the app.... 6. For those who want shutdown options handy....create a shutdown , restart, hibernate , sleep etc. shortcut on the desktop....frankly i too was baffled when the shutdown option was missing but quickly figured it out....the above way is easy... Other non-metro ways to shutdown: 1. Alt+F4 on the desktop (only when all apps and applications are closed) 2. ctrl+alt+delete and shutdown.... 3. add shortcuts on the desktop Right click on desktop->New->Shortcut and add the following line/lines depending on your choice (all without quotes): 1. for shutdown : "Shutdown -s -f -t 00" without quotes 2.for restart: "Shutdown -r -f -t 00" without quotes 3. for hibernate: "Shutdown -h" 4. for hybrid shutdown: "Shutdown -s -f -t 00 -hybrid" 5.for hybrid sleep: "rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Sleep" 6. for locking the comp: "Rundll32 User32.dll,LockWorkStation" or Win Key +L 7. for logging off: "Shutdown -l" (its minus L) 8. for switching users: "tsdiscon.exe" Now u might complain there will be too many icons on the desktops...but we can collect them in some folder...Microsoft might have removed some really useful features ....or so to say...some features we are used to.....but still Win 8/Win server 2012 have many useful features added to it...might not be evident at the first glance....but as u work with it ....it surely becomes clear...i agree that the out-of the box experience is little off the mark...requiring customizations even to do a normal shutdown...but once we get used to it...it wont bother much...OLD HABITS DIE HARD...but they surely die....We cant say theOS will be a hit or a flop...but surely is the fastest os I have seen....atleast at the startup and the general day to day working scenarios....and stable too... Also for getting most of the start menu functionality...one is forced to use the metro ui....which can be toggled using the Windows key... Right Click on the metro (start menu)...at the bottom right corner...click on all apps...and here u see that all apps (Accessories, Control Panel etc..) are listed as small icons on the Start menu (metro)....
Nice post chinchin. I can see you put time into it to get it done. I personally agree with you too that Metro in the start is a mess and you rather go back to normal Windows 7 UI but if you keep playing with it even when you hate it first will you start to like it. I also never expected myself to use the Metro IE since the release of CP but right now am I using it.
