Yeah, would be great to be able to de-select some stuff before the install.

 

By "bloat", what do you mean? Installed file size? Specific software packages? People mention bloat about different Linux distros but never seem to be specific.

What distros in your opinion don't have "bloat"?

 

Some years ago an Aussie guy produced mods of Windows, during installation you could surf the web and play games and at the start you could choose the software you wanted to add. He produced his own Linux distro with the same bells and whistles. One distro available at the moment allows you to build your own ISO image, you can have an ISO with just the OS or add the programs you want. If these guys can do it why isn't it universal? R29K does a cracking guide on setting up Elementary but it took me hours, why couldn't I just choose the same options during installation? It is possible, so why not? It would make Linux 10x more appealing over night.

 

Its all the software I dont want, its a pain in the arse.

 

Xubuntu Core for example has very few "bloat", but I think it's community made.

 

And? What is the problem?
Simply create a script like: 'sudo apt-get remove app1 app2 app3 app4 app5 -y'
Unwanted stuff is gone.
The same way you can install wanted proggies.

Thanks. Just wondered what people were using to determine if a distro was in their opinion bloated or not.

 

Same with phones these days, samsung adds alot of their own apps which you cannot delete on stock. Same counts for htc

 

Phones and Tablets Apps are welded into those damned things, I spent weeks reading up and then attempting to mod my phone, I achieved next to nothing, it wasn't worth the effort.

 

You shouldn't have to do that, a clean install should be just that. No matter what OS I put on my PC I install the bare minimum and keep it that way, the more you install and then remove the quicker it falls on its face.

 

A custom ROM with minimal or Pico Gapps is the solution.

Does anyone else think it is odd that the linuxmint.com web site goes down just when a new version is released? I now see a message about site maintenance but scheduling maintenance at this time just does not make sense.

Could it be that the site was overwhelmed by disgusted Win 10 users looking for a better solution?
