It's cool... Linux is secure by nature - so any browser will be safe ( except IE...has anyone ported that ActiveX crap to Linux? LOL)

Try different kernels from updater (and if you are feeling brave maybe 4.8) - there's no guarantee it will fix all your problems but it's worth a shot.

Thanks for the heads up

On a side note, I am having to reinstall Linux Mint 18 fresh. Will this new update be an issue? Should I hold off installing 18 and wait for 18.1 to be released?

    Missing xfce
    Missing Gnome

I really don't like that they never release these under the beta. I'm more of a xfce or gnome type person.

Mint doesn't ship with Gnome (3) at all.

An oversight on their part in my opinion, but they do have an XFCE build. Just wish they'd release it with their beta's too.

They made Cinnamon because they don't like Gnome3.

KDE and Xfce versions usually lag behind the Cinnamon and Mate releases. In the past they have released beta versions of all editions shortly before releasing the final version and I have no reason to believe they will change this practice.

As to the Gnome 3 issue, Mint's popularity grew wildly because they offered an alternative desktop environment. Personally i am VERY glad they did. I consider the Gnome 3 shell and Ubuntu's default desktop to be unusable. Lots of choices is one of Linux's best features, everybody can use what they like best.

I've just noticed that Kernel 4.8 is now officially supported in Linux Mint 18 "Sarah". Go to Update Manager > View > Linux kernels (see the attached screenshot). I've installed kernel 4.8.0.30 and everything works great, so far no issues... See the description of my hardware in my signature...

@admins: My post count should be 62 (including this one)... Just saying

Just to bring everyone up to date: The .iso's (final) for Cinnamon and MATE were released on 12/16 and this morning (12/19) I discovered that you can upgrade from 18 to 18.1 using the Update Manager. It didn't take long and everything looks good so far.

A word of caution about the process: After you check the box to confirm you really want to update and click "Apply", a new dialogue box appears and you're asked to enter your root password. After you do this, there's quite a long pause before the process resumes and the new files begin to download. Be patient here, it will eventually proceed.

Hmmm, since I installed 18.1 I have extreme long (up to two minutes) shut down times in like 4 of 10 cases. Everything else runs smooth like it did with Mint 18.0.

I honestly wonder if Linux will ever actually become useable.
