I have a dell xps 8700 running on Windows 10 x64. Initially I downloaded WindowsMediaCenter_10.0.10134.0v2.1, but couldn't get Installer to run without any errors. I read somewhere I needed codecs so I installed Sharkys advance codecs V562, bu I still couldn't get the installer for WMC to run. I loaded WindowsMediaCenter_6.3.9600.16384_x64_v10 and it installed fine and it even placed a shortcut on my desktop. The problem is even after clicking on it or the ehshell.exe, nothing happens; i.e. it doesn't seem to execute. I ran installer again for WindowsMediaCenter_6.3.9600.16384_x64_v10 and it says it's already loaded. I figure I'll uninstall and reinstall, but i can't even see it in the programs installed in the Control Panel. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm running Home and couldn't get the NETWORK SERVICES tab to work, but with the directions in the WORKAROUNDS file, it was a breeze to just copy each line and paste it into the command prompt. Worked like a charm.

My spare PC was updated to 1511 (10586) the other day and Media Centre was removed (again).

I am now unable to reinstall it and all that happens is the installer says something about something running as pid x in session n. That is all she wrote.

I tried it several times with the same result but I'm afraid I haven't managed to get a screen shot or look at the logs yet.

Next time I try, I'll do further testing but in the meantime I wondered if anyone else has had this problem or found a work around.

edit: Just run it again and I think the message above refers to the fact that trustedinstaller had just been started. I get another dos window appear for a split second, which is presumably from bin\installer.bat but I don't get a chance to see what it says. There doesn't seem to be any events logged and I can't find any setup logs anywhere so I have no idea how to progress from here.

Hi all. I Use Mikinho's Mount Image to load Blu Ray iso, which play through PowerDVD, all through WMC. However, it now keeps giving me a "Unable to load Mount Image" error, and won't play the DVDs when using WMC. Anyone else have the same problem and find a workaround? Or does anyone have an alternative, with still having Blu Rays show up in Movies and play in WMC?

    Hello,
With latest Patch Tuesday Windows 8.1 KB3108669 replaces eshell.dll with version 6.3.9600.18124.
Taking Ownership of previous file and with appropriate autorization it's easy to replace this file with new version in ehome folder.

I had this issue before and what I had to do was uninstall PlayReady which killed the Media Center service then was able to uninstall WMC most of the time. I say most of the time because I did have one instance I had to reboot after uninstalling PlayReady then was able to uninstall WMC.

Are you using the same directory on your C drive that you originally created and installed WMC the first time? I noticed that I wasn't able to reinstall WMC with my original C:\WMCinstall directory that I left on the drive, just for that purpose. Appeared that something had been changed in one of the subdirectories during the original install that prevented it from installing again. I just deleted that directory, then recreated it with the compressed install file I downloaded and was able to install WMC again.

FYI, I got wmc working. I ran TestrRights and ran Uninstaller files fromWindowsMediaCenter_6.3.9600.16384_x64_v10, which removed WMC from my computer. Then ran TestRights and Installer file again. This time WMC came up.

Thanks bodine, I'll give that a try tomorrow.

    edit:

Thanks very much. Unzipping over the existing folder allowed the installation to proceed and everything seems to be working again - until the next update that is.

We now just have to hope that Microsoft doesn't change something and break it.

Wanted to give a big thank you  to everyone working on this. I have tried a number of alternative media center programs (Kodi, NextPVR, etc.) and none of them have come close to the stability and functionality of MCE.

I did want to report a couple issues:

    1. After installing ver 10 x64, MCE would not open, even when run 'As Administrator'
    2. Installed ver 8 x64 and everything works except recording a show, both scheduled recording and clicking the record button on a live show. I have added the NETWORK SERVICE to the administrators group per the workaround (even tried both methods, lusrmgr.msc and command prompt). When I view Task Scheduler there is never a task for recording the show.

    Update 2

My hearfelt Thanks to all of you dedicated gurus who have brought this great improvement to Windows 10. Lack of WMC capability has kept me away from Win 10 as my daily driver even though I like many other features that also work well with my Windows 10 phone.

I have two W10 Pro desktop machines (dual booted with Win 8.1), both loaded with WMC version 10 using the HomeRun Prime with cable card

Machine 1 (UEFI) initially would not load the Guide (No Data Available) although it would play local channels properly. I added the Network Service to the Administrator group and now the Guide loads, all channels work, including DRM channels.
For two days now the installation records previously scheduled programs as dependably as Win 8.1

Machine 2 (BIOS) Loads the Guide perfectly and shows thumbnails for each channel when selected but will not dispaly video or produce sound even though it seizes one of the tuner channels and the network meter shows high download activity as is normal for WMC in Windows 8.1 Pro. Adding the Network Service as Admin made no difference. I also tried the Shark007 package to no avail. I've tried importing the eHome folder from Machine 1 to Machine 2, rescanned the cablecard channels while in Windows 10 with no positive change in terms of showing any video or sound. Both machines are updated to the latest Microsoft downloads and have the same 8 GB of RAM.

    Update 2: 12/11/2015
I discovered that the Media Center Receiver Service (C:\Windows\ehome\ehrec.exe) was not allowed through my Firewall. Added it and this troublesome machine is No longer troublesome including DRM channels. Again thanks to all who did this wonderful development task(s)

Any and all suggestions will be appreciated. :worthy:

    Update: 12/10/2015
After updating to kbxxxx900 cumulative update, CRM no longer works. Uninstalled, rebooted, installed, waited for Guide to finish downloading and DRM channels now work again.

Update: About two days after reinstalling version 10, DRM channels stopped working again. So the following is what I've done during the last week.

Reinstalled version 10 after a uninstall. All channel logos gone and drm content not working after reinstall. After a reboot DRM was working again as of 12/5/15 at 10:35 PM. Made a short recording from DRM channel (Showtime)

12/7/15 No tuner error and no video during live tv, repaired hdhomerun, reactivated cablecard and then a reboot, sytem files modified error on drm channels

12/10/15 Decided to give it another try. Uninstalled verion 10, Uninstalled HDHOMERun Prime Software, Reboot
Reinstall MediaCenter Version 10, Reinstall HDHomeRun Prime, Installed MCEBackup, Backed up Channel Lineup for future use.
DRM works, and previously recorded DRM still working.

Shutdown and restarted, all is still working. Hopefully it won't stop working in a few days.

It is annoying, isn't it? How about enabling Unified Write Filter?

I wonder how many of these problems are caused by Winblows updates, it seems they have an endless supply of updates to Windows 10

Yeah, I reckoned so. Maybe LTSB would be the best choice.

for my MCE box which is just on the tv and used solely as a media center, I've turned all updates off and never had an issue.

I thought the updates were causing my problems, but everything kept working after the updates on Tuesday and then this morning with no updates in the meantime, DRM stopped working again.

    Win7 upgrade to Win10 WMCv10 LAV

I started out on Dec 5th with fresh 10Pro + KMS. I was mistakenly working with WMC v2. Long story short, I thought my activation problems were a result of KMS. So I scraped it all off and installed Win7 with Daz, then did the Win10 upgrade. When I continued to get activation problems, I reviewed my notes and discovered WMC v10 was the version that I should be using. So I ran V2 uninstall.bat, then all the required .bat (s) from v10.

Along the way, I had to do the LAV dance, the NETWORK shuffle, RDP wrapper, and every other thing since page 176. Luckily, immediately after protected started working, I made a restore point which I have had to fall back on several times, as a result of getting bombarded with spyware while I had the shields turned off.

All I can tell you is that Live Protected works. Recorded Protected works. The Guide started working without any persuation. Manual Future Recording works as well.

I have been documenting my efforts of attempting to install a Ceton Echo extender with this setup here.....

    thegreenbutton.tv/forums/viewtopic.php?p=99409#p99409

close but no cigar as of yet.

BTW, I have updates turned ON and have been receiving 5 or 10 daily since Dec 6. afaik the updates have not killed anything yet. I haven't noticed the WMC "stopping problem", but I have not tested any series recordings.

BTW, If you want to see your updates in Win10, ask Cortana for PowerShell, and type in Get-WindowsUpdateLog
