Hello, I encounter a little bug with WMC in Windows 10 (all WMC versions) : after some time of watching TV or a film (ie 20-30 min), after closing WMC program, start menu and search bar don't respond anymore. It's not important for me since I usually shut up the computer after WMC via the Power button. A reboot solves the problem until I launch WMC for an other film.
As I'm sure you realize, there are hundreds of pages in this thread, with thousands of posts, many (most?) of which are incomprehensible to some of us (ME), so trying to read them can be an aimless exercise in futility. Believe me, I tried doing exactly that before posting at all. I ASSUMED that v8 referenced version 8 of WMC, but don't absolutely know that to be a fact, so didn't see much point in responding as though I did know it. If that is true, I have no idea. I don't know what version was on here when it was Win7 (which worked exactly as it was supposed to), I don't even remember which version I d/l last week which only sort of worked.
You are having very similar problems to me. I found that the windows update component was somehow fubared and when I tried to fix that I utterly failed. I followed instructions here support.microsoft.com en-us kb 971058 (sorry I can't post links, but since it doesn't work that isn't much of a loss) and it blew everything up even more so I reset windows and then everything just worked perfectly. I am not sure if there is some other software we have installed that is resulting in this behavior, but if you want it to work you have the option to make it work. Given how long I futzed around with it I wish I had simply done a reset earlier, or installed WMC right after my clean install.
Thanks... it shows as installed, it just won't launch. I've been pinning it to the taskbar, doesn't make a bit of difference.
We ARE in a WMC thread, not a Netscape or some other software thread. This is not good software practice. You may want to start keeping notes as to what you do.
Yes v8 is a previous version of WMCv12. V8 is often used to repair failed attempts at installing v12. Might be easier for one of us to install this for you. You would have to install TeamViewer. This WMCv12 project might be too advanced for you.
From my perspective, it could have been a reference to Win8 or to a work around version of WMC which ran on Win8 (neither of which applied to me), that's why I was loath to assume. I'm an admittedly abysmal note taker. I immediately forget anything I write down and I don't learn that way either. I'm also not very good about reading documentation, I do most things by instinct unless I'm forced to do otherwise.
Tell me which way to try first... I can absolutely uninstall v12 again, and if you tell me where v8 is, give that a try. Can't hurt, right?
Download TeamViewer then select Basic and Home Use. Click on my name, and then on Private Message, and send me the ID and Password Do Not Post the ID and Password here. What is the number listed as Your ID What is the Password Sit back and watch.
You're gonna love this... I just d/l v8, it installed, even put a shortcut on the desktop, but it wouldn't open. ARGH. d/l teamviewer
Yours should start to act normally after the reset that you are in the process of doing. the wmc folder will likely be gone so you will likely have to open file explorer and make the folders again c:\wmc\wmc_v12 go get some WinRAR 64 bit (make sure you are at the official site) there are lots of fakes out there. download v12 again (uncheck download manager) and use WinRAR to extract to c:\wmc\wmc_v12 open file explorer again and go into c:\wmc\wmc64 and right click testrights runas admin in the 2nd testrights window do the cd C:\ do the click and copy in file explorer and paste the path into the 2nd testrights window. type installer hopefully things should start acting normally now. I would suggest that you do not install CCleaner or other such tools. and don't install antivirus until you get WMC going. When I was watching you look at the "installed programs" that Win10 was going to remove, I just about puked. There was a lot....too many...each one takes a little bite out of your Win10, and possibly WMC so get WMC working first, and be cautious what you install.
I haven't looked that list over yet, but I did notice that a lot of it came preinstalled on the machine. None of it will be back. Malwarebytes has been my go to antiviral, and I thought CCleaner was pretty much sacrosanct. I guess not. What about a defrag program?
WMC v12 is in the process of setting itself up... You're not going to believe this... "Downloadable Guide Not Available" Can't wait to see how the rest of this goes, but right now it looks very much like where I was before I asked for help here.
None of it till you get WMC going. Win10 includes its own version of of antivirus which is Defender. I'm sure there is a defrag built in. CCleaner in the hands of the untrained can do a lot of damage. I also noticed LiveMail from (Win7 or maybe office 2010)you don't need that. Maybe post the list and let the boys here eliminate the stuff you don't need.
