T-S, I've reviewed your instructions and I'm not sure on a couple of things. 1) I'm in the US, so getting my hands on Windows 10 N isn't looking easy. You're referring to the "special" Windows 10 package for Europe that doesn't contain any Media Player stuff, correct? If so, I'm not sure how I can proceed. 2) I assume, since it's in your instructions, that a fresh install of Windows 10 N on my home theater PC (ie, where the CableCard tuner is located) is necessary. If that's not true, please let me know. (For example, could I install Windows 10 N on a virtual machine and still export the proper stuff from the registry?) Thanks for your guidance on this.
Just a FYI for people... ROVI in the US and UK (as far as I have heard) are having issues with guide data right now. On a CLEAN Windows 7 machine only used for WMC, all channels show "no data" and on my 10 machine, I am getting the same result. So if you install this and you get no guide data right now, you might be configured fine but, there is guide data coming from Microsoft right now...
I discovered this nasty surprise on my two MCE machines on Thursday night. Luckily by Friday night it was partially fixed and I got a week or so of data, but I only had 4 days left so I wasn't looking forward to this weekend until it was fixed. Well, it looks like Microsoft has snuck the Anniversary Update onto all my systems. Assuming since I have the HDHomerun Prime, I'm screwed, blued, and tattooed (not necessarily in that order). Until the missing tuner issue is resolved, I'm wondering a couple things.... 1) Is it possible to revert a system back to Win 7 by formatting and reinstalling, using the same product key? Or does Microsoft put the key on a blacklist after the 30 day time period is over? The majority of my use on the HTPC is TV viewing and recording, so I don't need all the perks that came with Win 10. 2) Along that line of thought, if I were to get WMC up and running on an Anniversary machine, without the tuner support, would shows recorded on the Win 7 machine be view-able on the Anniversary machines, or would it run into DRM issues? Right now, shows can be shared between all my machines (except HBO). 3)Lastly, I've finally got my WHS 2011 machine back up and running. I've tried to follow the threads involving getting WMC to run on it, but they tend to jump around. Has that been worked out, and if so, would that work to record shows to play back on other machines? Sorry about all the questions. Just trying to come up with a work-around until MS quits screwing with us.
I am using 8.8.1 and seem to get an error about media center files on drm copy once channels, is this a bug with this new version?
I have done that a few times now, once after the free upgrade ended with out a problem. I didn't have any problems re-using my Windows 7 key to install Windows 7 on the same machine. The advanage to just formatting and re-installing WIndows 7 is you should be able to re-install 10 at a later date with out having to pay for a upgrade. On 2, dont think so. On the Anniversary upgrade, they killed off the old DRM system. This is why protected content wont play on WMC. It should restore if you can roll back but, only to the point where you upgraded (not 100% sure about this but, it should) so any recordings that are protectedafter the upgrade to 10 will be unplayable If your doing a dedicated HTPC (like I am), your better off sticking with Windows 7.. I only use the Windows 10 WMC for my office machine that needs 10 due to DirectX 12 (I game). As for guide issues, some are reporting that it's partly working, at this point I have guide data for Music channels but, nothing else... So FYI for people having issues getting guide data...
It's only affecting some areas from what I am hearing, So far East coast and parts of the UK (not exactly sure). All I know at this point, the only thing I have in my guide is the Music choice channels (just tells the type of music)... I cant say I have heard about other areas but, it is a big issue on Ms's Connect site..
I thought that was supposed to be baked into 8.8.1? EDIT : in fact yeah it starts up but it just says it can't display protected content, if I am supposed to do something to fix that please let me know.
