Like others, I fired up my media player (WMP12, because I have lots of playlists - for the rest, I resort to MPC-HC) today only to realize pretty much every video file crashed it (mp4, mkv, avi). I went and changed so many settings inside K-Lite's Codec Tweak Tool that I'm now no longer sure what the hell I did to fix this mess (all formats play a-okay now with any crash), but I think it had to do with setting MPEG/2's decoder as Microsoft, and either LAV (mostly LAV) or MERIT as decoder/splitter for the rest, on a by-case basis. Dunno whether this helps: I'm not even sure what fixed it, and I don't want to break my cfg again. Didn't have to replace the CompPkgSup.dll file and I'm glad about that, I hate it when sfc /scannow reports mismatches in the winsxs/wow64 section.
Does anyone have a copy of MCDU that they would be willing to share? All the links to it, that I can find, are no longer working. Thank you in advance.
Hey all What do I need to do to fix the Decoder Error? Do I need to reinstall WMC? Has there been any updates? I've got 8.1.1... Thanks all
I looks like windows update also broke playing mpeg-2 with WMP. I replaced CompPkgSup.dll and while it makes WMC work again, WMP still cannot play .mpg files. I uninstalled Windows DVD Player and reinstalled it from the Windows app store and WMP still cannot play mpg files, either with the old CompPkgSup.dll or new CompPkgSup.dll.
For Windows Media Player, replacing the CompPkgSup.dll file in C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder fixed the problem (W10 pro 64bits)
Thanks for the suggestion. WMP doesn't crash anymore, but only the audio plays, no video. Reinstalled DVD Player and still no go. edit: It doesn't work with mpg created by VideoRedo Plus where res is in HD.
Be sure to set the proper files in the proper folders. In my country most of the DVB-T channels are still in mpeg-2, and I am able to watch them without third party filters with WMC after replacing the CompPkgSup.DLLs. 64 bit DLL hash (in system32 on 64-bit OS only): Dimension: 38768 byte CRC32: 39679B44 CRC64: A317BA97308FE184 SHA256: 38A0164695ACFEE7B5FE69ED2F33DB551EE0DD3D9A2581C46B731F199B3CA910 SHA1: 58EF450EE5249F65AE8921FBED989810835E7B66 BLAKE2sp: AC3A6DCC4DBDEA747675D6F201568050C9A7B615D072B23AC55F97CE0E134991 32-bit DLL hash (in syswow64 on 64-bit OS, on system32 on 32-bit OS): Dimension: 33544 byte CRC32: 3DD569BD CRC64: E2022AC9CC9F2A4D SHA256: F5E90A3F599C2F38EC09F5BD664947A9F9AC4C13EE5BBABF56C219E56BD0BF53 SHA1: 204263A293E3ED83127C6524F5126919CD35801C BLAKE2sp: F0D0E18FBBC70FC4B321A8EB9930DCCA22176718A945497E4297668D5454F9D1
Hi there guys, Same problem here, I switched both files in two WMC that I've just updated, and none worked. Only switching codecs to LAV fully fixed the problem. I guess it depends on your country's main codec. Spanish user here.
Thanks, I copied the wrong one over to wow64. It works fine now. I don't have any 3rd-party codecs in Windows 10.
everything is greayd out for me, i dont know how i can change it when i cant do anything, i just can change the owner itself, thats it, but this doesnt change the permissions
ops, my bad, just forgot to metion ur way as well... the explorer opens and i try then to copy it there, doesnt work as well. dont get me wrong, i know it has something to do with me, but i dont know what. perhaps a bit more detailed so it fits stupidity ? :/
Please make a little effort to remember what you have done :'-) I am happy that replacing CompPkgSup.dll had temporarily solved the problem but it will only last until Microsoft definitely patch it
The old (10.0.14393.0) versions of comppkgsup.dll stored in the winsxs folders mysteriously shrank from 37k and 33k to 5.5k and 4.4k on one of my PCs this morning. They both have a new time stamp of shortly after an update (KB3150513) was installed. Any ideas?
Hello, M$ will certainly replace it since the new CompPkgSup.dll broke official apps like DVD Player and WMP. I had to replace file from SysWow64 folder too, and now WMP works (it stopped working with .mkv files).
If you have K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, open the Codec Tweak Tool. In the "preferred decoders" (at the bottom) window, try to set everything to MERIT, except for MPEG and MPEG-2 (otherwise .avi files will start to crash on you), which you'll set to "Microsoft". Click "apply & close". Then go to "Media Foundation" (at the bottom, too) and make sure .mkv is NOT checked in either column, otherwise half of your Matroska containers will cause crashes. You'll lose the ability to display .ass subtitles on WMP, but at least you'll regain stability. I have .mp4 checked on both the 32-bit and 64-bit columns to enable .ass subtitles; I'm stable on that side, so I didn't change anything (if it ain't broken, don't fix it). Click "apply & close". So if you find that a certain file format doesn't work well, try associating it with the Microsoft Foundation decoders or MERIT until it doesn't break anymore. I believe that's what I did last night, but I've been checking and un-checking so many options there could be an intermediary step or unknown magic switch I forgot to post here. Also, please note that I've only fixed MY problems with .avi, .mp4 and .mkv, since those are the formats I use most, with MY setup. I didn't test anything else and your mileage might vary.
have tried it again... i absolutly dont know what am i doing wrong here. i can not change permissions and i cant copy it with the other way ... wanna use WMC again
I did the lav filters using mcdu. I needed to change both the audio and video for wmc to work. Thanks for that fix. My issue now is the ff button does not work. The skip button on the remote does work. Im ota using wmc for recorded tv only. The ff was so smooth the main reason I never gave up on it. Is there a fix for the ff using lav filters in the lav setup? I also have the compkgsup downloaded. Can anyone tell me if the ff works as smoothly as it did before the update? I'm really thinking of just getting a used rig with win7 just for wmc. what a pia ms is being. Thanks
paulsk Tried to send you a message but seems you need to have posted 5 for it to work. Shoot me a message with your email and I'll send it over.
