@jeff2012, yes, understood, but if one didn't want to do that in order to keep security updates flowing, then LTSB is the best option as these are easier to fix when they break things.

 

True, I was talking strictly from a HTPC perspective, no word, office, printing just HTPC for WMC

 

I disabled the WU Service on my Win7, 5 years ago.

W10/10586 has been disabled for over a year.

All I missed is all the whining about AU or CU killed my WMC.

Hollywood doesn't want you to record anymore.....So they paid MS to shut recording down.

I'm getting sick of TV.....All the movies have watermarks now. I just tried out the best cable package they have, all the movies are old. I'm going back to OTA and Kodi for the summer. The only thing I'll miss is History Channel and Weather (I'm sure I can find those 2 online).

Anyone willing to let me login to their server for History Channel?

 

I gave up trying to get WMC working and defected to Kodi!

 

Or dvblink server on a real W7 machine, dvblinkclient/WMC on W10 VM (or viceversa, depending how powerful is the machine taken in account)

Has anyone tried this in AU or CU ?

 

For an archive of thousands of MKV HD movies and countless TV shows ripped from my DVDS which is a better organized home theatre experience KODI or Plex and why?

Kodi all the way for me, can't beat the customization options. If you really want a great experience, set up Emby server (used to be MediaBrowser) and use the Emby app within Kodi. Pure awesomeness. You can also set up Kodi with menu option to open WMC from within Kodi and then return when you close WMC. This is how I have mine set up and with Emby server running it is the absolute best and most flexible HTPC set up I've ever used. Also with Emby you can get remote access to everything, including live tv (may need Emby premiere subscription for guide data), although DRM channels won't usually work.

EDIT: Also wanted to add, I've found transcoding from Emby to work much more smoothly than Plex, especially remotely. Plex is probably simpler/easier to set up, but I think the Kodi/Emby combo is ultra elegant and infinitely customizable.

 

I started with Meedio back in the day and I thought that was customizeable!

 

You got involved long before me. I was using Nero 6 or 7 to stream my TV Wonder around the property. Then I found WMC.....sure made things easier.

Was Meedio the software used in the Niveus Media Center PC's? I saw the Niveus extender once...Looked like some well made hardware, reminded me of a 1970's Music amp...Big heat sinks.

I need to reinstall W10 and I was thinking of installing version 1703 from MSDN image. Does that version still work with WMC or does it include updates that break WMC?

 

No it will not, WMC will only go up to V1511

 

It really depends on what kind of TV you need to set-up. I got OTA DVB-T in Italy, WMC 8.8.1 installed on Windows 10 CU 15063.296, Avermedia HD Volar Pro usb tv stick, everything works just fine. If you need cable tv, that's entirely another matter, as in this case you are correct, it doesn't work on CU.

 

Correct as I use a cable card to receive protected premium content and for that purpose DRM was broken from windows AU forward.

Perhaps one day the programming experts might be able to do something.

The other alternative is a Silicon Dust Homerun with cable card which is rumored to soon be able to work in windows 10 with premium channels but NOT in WMC but instead their software.

 

Crash2009, i am all caught up now, but ran into issue where tuners are not detected. I have followed all instructions in post #7400 by mgreig. i have Win 10 Pro v1155.10586.104, SD 3-tuner w/ latest drivers v20161119. DCA passed.

I ran through the entire setup twice, including installing windows from scratch, but no luck. Anything else I can try to get the tuners to be detected?

 

Make sure you don't have some cumulative Windows update or something else that sneaked in on you. Your Windows version is fine (though I think you mean 1511 not 1155) but if you let it run any updates at all on install you may have gotten a cumulative update that is breaking your tuner detection. If so, you'll have to uninstall the update (making sure update service is off so it won't download again) and then reboot. Look for the last cumulative update installed, that's probably it.

 

Anyway to get keyboard shortcuts, like Ctrl E = videos to work when WMC is closed? I.e while at desktop, pressing Ctrl E opens WMC to Videos section
