Ever since I installed the Windows Update MiniTool on my three 1511 machines, it is way more convenient to block the cumulative updates while allowing nonbreaking updates and modern app updates to go through. Recommended!
The mini tool appears to be able to block the cumulative update even after it made it to the list of updates to be installed. With the microsoft tool to block updates you have to do it before Windows puts it in the list of updates about to be downloaded and installed. In most cases I was too late and found it a huge time waster having to uninstall cumulative updates. The Windows Update mini tool allows you to scan available updates and select the ones to be blocked.
Ok, got it, thought maybe you had found some way to 'automatically' block all cumulative updates proactively. Sounds like a manual scan/block is still needed. I'll just have to leave update service disabled I guess.
I am having problems with guide data on a fresh install. Last time I resorted to reinstalling 10 and it worked miraculously. This time it is a no go. WMC does work in other aspects, it simply says that "The new TV setup data could not be downloaded. The existing data, if available, will be used as you continue through TV signal setup". Sometimes it takes a long time to fail, other times it is immediate. That difference makes me wonder why the timeout is variable. Then I went through the steps suggested in workaround. Edited the host file to. 65.55.186.113 72.246.56.59 Deleted the files and folders mentioned "mcepg2-0" except mine were "mcepg3-0" ipconfig /release renew flushdns Restarted run as admin no change. Then I tried: Close WMC Open Task Scheduler - Control Panel, System and Security, Administrative Tools, Schedule Tasks In the left tree expand Task Scheduler Library, Microsoft, Windows, Media Center In the right pane under name, right-click ObjectStoreRecoveryTask, and click Run (let it run for 2 mins) Close Task Scheduler Deleted the files and folders mentioned "mcepg2-0" except mine were "mcepg3-0" flush dns again Reboot "WMC has corrected a problem with your recording data and will download the Guide again. You should review your recordings to verify they are still scheduled correctly." Nothing actually happens. I try to setup TV again. It still fails. Last resort I tried a few zip codes around my house. Still fails. Any other suggestions to try? My next step is to dig out some old parts and make a very loud and clunky win7 box then install and try to copy the mcepg2-0 files and folders over or something. I don't know if a VM would have access to tuner, but I guess I could try that as well. winver: 15063.138 firstrun error "Download result for package 'EpgLineups': Failed</DownloadUpdates>" PS. I did try the ping thing which I thought might be meaningful, but then searched and found Crash's comment that whether you can ping the server doesn't mean much.
Thank you for taking the time to respond. I previously followed those steps exactly before going onto a more circuitous path. Of course the first time deleting the ehome folders was unnecessary as they did not exist. Maybe I can check what DNS my router is using and change it to google. In any case I appreciate your response and will post if I ever figure out a solution. I did disable updates. I forget what I did as it was over a year ago, but eventually needed an update (as my first biggest mistake is that this is not a dedicated box) and had to reinstall simply to get updates functioning again. Hence the reinstall. I just stupidly forgot to copy programdata\ehome folder first.
You haven't posted a shortcut to close WMC. Alt+F4 is not working for me. Is there any way to force WMC for Win 10 to close with Alt+F4? Or any other keyboard shortcut or string I can program into a remote? The shortcoming might be something to do with Classic Shell but I thought they had fixed that. Alt+F4 is working to close other windows in Windows 10, but by no means all. TIA
Hi. I recently upgraded to W10 V1703 Build15063.0 and installed WMC v8.8.1. So far all seems to work well. So thanks to everyone for giving me WMC on W10! Previously on W8.1, WMC paused Windows Updates during recording - "Microsoft-Windows-WindowsUpdateClient EVENTID 27" . I used this event ID to prevent copying of files from the media centre PC to NAS and other devices during recoding as I found the recordings could sometimes be corrupted. This event is not happening in W10 with WMC. I have searched through the Event Viewer for anything that happens then a recording STARTS, but have had no luck. Does anyone have any ideas? I have a work around at the moment using a small script running in the background, but this needs to run continuously, so I'm not so happy with it! For information, I am running Windows 10 on an upgraded (Q6700 CPU) Sony VGX XL201 Media Centre, with two Hauppauge DVB-S2 satellite cards.
