I have just updated my Windows 10 x64 system to 1709 build 16299.15. I then installed WMC v12. Everything seems to work properly except ehtray.exe does not start as it normally does and if I manually start it, it will stop running after about 10 secs. If I open WMC and then start ehtray.exe manually, it will continue to run. If I close WMC, it will stop in about 10 secs unless something is being recorded. It will run as long as the recording lasts. This is not normal behavior. Also I have tried this on two systems as of now and the results are the same. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thank you. I had been using v12 with Windows 10 x64 1703 build 15063.632 and previous, with no issues.
Thank you for replying. I installed WMC v8.8.1 on two of my systems, after uninstalling v12, and the results are the same, unfortunately.
Unfortunately, it did not help. In your system, ehtray.exe is running? You are able to see the WMC icon in the notification area when you record (Red orb)?
As I said, everything works normally, including recording and scheduled recording. The only thing wrong is that the ehtray.exe process, which enables the notification area icons for WMC, does not run properly.
I can't offer much advice for what's wrong with your setup, but I can at least confirm that on my fully updated 1703 system that WMC v8.8.1 is still working without any major issues or lost functionality using non-cablecard OTA hdHomeRun Connects in Orlando. That said I do get occasional glitches with black primary video output and have to end the main WMC program in Task Manager and re-open WMC to get the video back, but I think that's more an AMD driver issue or something else than and a direct WMC issue (the Emby WMC plug-in is the culprit most of the time). Overall WMC does the recording without issue and the tray icon works, so it is at least POSSIBLE for it to work...
Thank you for your response. I have tried all I know and this occurs on two separate Windows 10 x64 systems. Both have different hardware and were clean installations of Windows 10 originally. I hope a solution can be found.
I have installed the 16299.15 release on all my MCE machines and they all have issues now - when you load MCE it freezes on the splash screen. If you get beyond that, it will freeze on playback of anything after a minute or so. They have all worked perfectly for years on whatever version I have when 10 first came out. I read above v8.8.1 should fix this - can anyone provide a link please - have been looking through the pages but there are so many - thanks in advance! If I can't fix, I'll need to roll back to previous version but this will only last a few weeks as everyone will get the new version soon enough.
Two year lurker posting for the first time lol. I had this same issue - Windows Update service was disabled, but an update was installed yesterday, which stopped WMC from seeing my HDHR Prime. This solution worked for me: Do a System Restore using the "Windows Update/Critical Update" restore point. Following ktide's suggestion, I disabled the tasks in the Windows Update and Update Orchestrator folders in Task Scheduler Stop and disable the Windows Update Service Stop and disable the Update Orchestrator Service It's been a few hours and the update hasn't re-installed itself. I'll post back if it does.

Thanks! This is a very troublesome problem. on the one hand, Microsoft has given up the WMC, these bugs will never be fixed. Let it be it.
