PCWorld is full of crap (as usual)... I disabled Cortana perfectly fine on 14393 (anniversary update) without using 3rd party software and the result is no different than any previous builds that I've used over the last year

That is the problem, it has been removed from Home and Pro as well. Reg entries will supposedly not do anything anymore.

Again just remove cortana and search2 alltogether

grab install_wim_tweak.exe and put it in the same directory of the following script

    Code:
    @echo off
    cd /d "%~dp0"
echo Uninstalling Cortana and Search2 ...
    CLS
    install_wim_tweak.exe /o /l
    install_wim_tweak.exe /o /c Microsoft-Windows-Search2 /r
    install_wim_tweak.exe /o /c Microsoft-Windows-Cortana /r
    install_wim_tweak.exe /h /o /l
echo Cortana and Search2 should be uninstalled. Please reboot Windows 10.
    pause

Then install Classic shell to get back the search functionality access

That'd be wrong. I've tested it myself, so I can say that it still works perfectly.

You are missing the point. :)

By the way, removing "stuff" is not a good idea, some updates restore it back later, it is better to just disable it by removing all users.

We will see, once AU with all the settings will get released. Ms has tendency to apply surprises in the last minute.

True that! same reason we have always suggested never to use removeWAT, it comes back to bite you

Not sure what's your point. Mine is to not have dangerous and useless things on my installation

Updates are called updates because they are aimed to something that is already there.

No packages to update, no updates. Seem pretty simply to me.

Remove WAT has nothing to do with that.

Patching / deleting someting isn't the same as uninstalling properly.

Some updates are upgrades, basically a reinstall, but I can not really argue, I have never used your method. :v:

I don't think you can disable cortana after the anniversary upgrade. I converted my installations to enterprise so that I can use gpedit.

Can you expand on that? How do you now search your computer to find things?

I haven't yet installed the update, and as I am, I have Cortana disabled but can still search, in fact search goes faster without Cortana in the way.

Attempt To Disable Cortana Resulted In This...

After getting the Anniversary upgrade today, I read many posts about how to try to disable Cortana. None of them worked for me, so I tried to do it the old way. I did a Safe-Mode boot, and renamed the Cortana directory in the Windows folder. Of course I had to stop the process first in Task Manager, but anyways you get the drift.
I rebooted to Windows 10, logged in, and explorer threw a temper tantrum. Wouldn't load the task bar correctly, just sat there and gave me the spinning circle of doom. Waited for about 5 minutes, but it never did get going. The only way to shut down other than the power button was with a Cntl+Alt+Del command.
I ended up going back to Safe mode and putting the Cortana directory back to the original name.

So, the old way of renaming the Cortana directory will no longer work.. Bummer.
