I'm aware of the fact that you can do an in place update using an ISO file but as he already has done a major update from, if I remember correctly 1809 and is having issues with CU's, I stand by my recommendation to do a clean install of 18362.116.
I have a friends Asus laptop with No DVD drive, only USB port. My friend wants to upgrade to win 10 build 1903, however Windows 10 build 1903 failed to update twice via Windows Update, not sure what error message he received. Can I copy the Windows 10 1903 Installation files directly onto the SSD and run an update? Anyone see any problems doing this or should this be done only via a bios boot from USB flash key drive?
If you are upgrading, yes you can copy the installation source to the system drive and run the setup.exe. If you plan on clean installing, it would be better to make a bootable flash drive.
You would need to make a 18362.1 ISO from UUP dump and use W10UI_6.4 to integrate the SSU and CU but since you would need to make a 18362.1 ISO and the only way to do that is with UUP files, you may as just make a 18362.116 ISO.
Id solved my problem that showed this pc cant be upgraded to windows 10. It´s not about usb or internal drives. It´s the shi**y battleye. I never installed this. I dont play online, but I guess some game installed it somehow. There is no uninstaller, so I went to / program files (x86) / common / and deleted Battleye folder. And voila.
Worked like a charm. Thank you. CU KB4505057 was installed twice from WU. Go figure. Everything seems fine.
Guys, did you notice anything strange with your 1903 build on network file access? Before moving from 1709 I could open big (around 200-400MB) PDF files on a mapped network drive quite fast. After the update the PDF load time incresed to 30-40s. The files reside in a Windows XP SP3 machine with an "hidden" $ share. SMBv1 is enabled on the Windows 10 machine and I can browse files and folders fast and without problems. Also right-clicking takes time too. I tried disabling defender but to no avail. Tried setting the cache timeouts at 0 too. Nothing seems to work. My other Windows 7 and 8.1 machines are very fast (4-5s max on heaviest files) so it's not a network or Windows XP permission issue.
Best to download the ISO by UUP Dump Website and select the cumulative 18362.116 with Convert option, that will integrate the updates to 18362.116 automated in one run. If you want to do it manually, you can use W10UI for updates integration in the 18362.30 MVS/Techbench ISO.
Set the registry to have the preserved storage disabled and install a new update (when you already are on the latest update, wait for the new CU, after it's installed you should have the 7GB of preserved storage space back. https://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/reserved-storage-in-windows-10.79347/page-5#post-1521088
