When you upgrade to Windows 10 from 7 or 8.1, there are a few things that you need to take into account. You: MUST have Windows 7 or 8.1 already activated need to upgrade this to Windows 10 through the official Windows update MUST ensure that Windows 10 is properly activated can then do a properly clean install to Windows 10. You would think Windows 10 would be activated straight away after the upgrade, however this may not be the case. It would be safer to wait a couple of days to be on the safe side. It would be advisable to have all your docs etc backed up from your system drive before the upgrade (including bookmarks etc), and have a Windows 10 clean install ISO ready. You can test out your programs and muck around with it whilst you are waiting for the 'safety' period. Nothing too extreme to crash your system though! Leave this to the very end . In any case, having the stuff backed up first gives you that safety.
@lobo11: Personally I'll wait for the official Release from Microsoft it self and NOT use an leaked RTM at all! Reason are very easy: Microsoft has made it clear that user's should upgrade from legal Windows 7 SP1 and 8.1 to Windows pro. Not doing so will maybe result in losing the benefit of an 'Lifetime' free use (incl. all Updates etc.) of Windows 10. What happen if use an leaked RTM and their ISO for to do an install BEFORE July 29. 2015, nobody know, just it's possible that your original Product Key will be marked and placed in those group of the 1 year limited upgrades. That's just an possibility, just why I should take the risk?! Infact on several occasions Microsoft hat announced the way they will use for Upgrades and Installations of Windows 10 and what benefit the different kind of users may get. Therefore, at this moment, I really don't mind about anything and will quietly wait for July29/30.... 2015 to arrive before starting to 'upgrade' my machines with Windows 7 (1) and Windows 8.1 (4) at my home. And in my Office it will be done the exact same way. I'm not in the rush the I NEED and MUST have Windows 10 as fast as possible!
I think we don't have to wait until the 29th I have heard that they will release the RTM on MSDN before that but we will see ! And for the upgrade from former windows I would wait indeed until the 29th
like i said previously, create a new local account (admin) delete your msa, then log in and recreate your msa again, you can then delete the other local account, this fixes a lot of bugs. it should be the same msa that you used before, and are now repairing.
I am not upgrading using any leak, MS, well i'm just going to follow their instructions, as they are hoping people don't, more $$$ for them
Leak from MSDN with correct hashes would not be a "leak" at all is it not certainaly not if you would have an MSDN account
I just duel-boot. 10 upgraded from 7/8 are on separate partitions, and I doubt MS tracks license info via MSA. Besides, I want dem latest builds
Yes, you are right a normal person will not look into ISO filesize, but MAYBE will look into it's SSD free space crunched by the 15Gb Windows directory. Windows XP = 1.5GB windows directory and has almost 85% of windows 8.1 functionality Windows 7-10 - big ISO filesizes almost the same in term of functionality as XP Ubuntu 900MB ISO, packs a lot of functionalities A good example of Microsoft failure is Classic Shell - A LOT of features in 6.5 MB installation size. YES, it takes just 6 damn megabytes. Microsoft is struggling to achieve that by adding 200M to the ISOS. Just to conclude what i wanted to say with the Da Vinci saying: Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
Never did get 10166 to work on Bay Trail tablet. Even doing an upgrade install over 10162 made Windows revert it back. Bodes well for RTM that kind of thing happening this late. Somehow. I guess.
I'm sure it was probably drivers and that is a problem if the people who make drivers can't make them in time but I am guessing they will.
The drivers Microsoft use are from 2006 half the time right now. It's not the drivers. The drivers do not cause the Start menu and Cortana to die, yet mysteriously "sometimes" work in one out of ten attempted installs. Forcing the very latest drivers to be installed from the actual .wim doesn't help. The edition doesn't help. Enabling or disabling anything possible doesn't help. It's an OS problem. Microsoft on the support site even admit to knowing of it, and not knowing what the cause actually is yet. For some it has happened since 10158.
