Damn WU forcibly installed a new nvidia driver on my PC :X No warning whatsoever, performance of my pc degraded so badly as if it was running on software acceleration on an ancient gpu. I restarted and voila! A new driver :-/ I hope this behaviour doesn't continue after RTM. Often there is simply no need to update the driver or for stability reasons one stays on an older version.
Guess this is the price to pay for being an Insider a.k.a. unpaid outsourced beta tester. But the new WU sucks anyways, no options to select what to install.
You can disable the option of receiving drivers through WU. Code: System -> Advanced system settings -> Hardware -> Device Installation Settings Not sure if Microsoft has fixed it or not yet as before it would download device drivers regardless.
Thanks, I'll try it now. The mail app suite updated and at last the push notifications work Photos has become unbelievably crash prone though lol.
Yeah the device driver situation is both a blessing and a curse. For those that know what they're doing, mostly a curse! The reason why it isn't a bad thing is that people in general, do not update their drivers. By having them provided via Windowsupdate at least they are more up to date. The drivers on Windowsupdate are WHQL in nature. It would be good if Windowsupdate specifically did not detect a new driver for installation if a newer one is already installed (WHQL or not). It would also be good if as soon as any driver went WHQL that it would be available under Windowsupdate, to ensure that most people actually stay updated.
Too intrusive but a necessary evil for most I suggest. Have Device Installation Settings to Never install .. does go through the throws of installing the nvidia drivers (blank screen etc) and to the extent of requesting a restart but Nvidia control panel shows only the latest set of drivers. go figure
