Yep, can be that easy . In case one activates his shiny new Retail erroneous as Volume in experiments with Office, simply needs to re-install the generic Retail, done .
#1. Only way atm. #2. Harddrive shouldn't avoid Win 8 OEM activation, did you try to get the key from BIOS? #3. 'permanently' per MS Free Upgrade Offer definition means the 'lifetime' of the upgraded device.
I have a upgrade fail because of startup problems, and another member did not work until he ran check disk to fix errors, just trying to cover all bases. This is what MS recommends:What you can do before attempting the upgrade? You can do some pre-requisite tasks to ensure a smooth migration to Windows 10. If you are using a name brand computer such as a Dell or HP, go to the manufacturers website for the model computer you are using and download the latest available drivers for that computer. Store them on a disc or USB thumb drive. Important drivers you should try to obtain include Chipset, Network and Video Drivers. Its possible that they might have only Windows 7 drivers, those will work with Windows 10. Other things you can do: 1.Uninstall any security software before attempting to upgrade. 2.Disable any encryption software you might have installed. 3.Disable/uninstall disk utility software such as DVD/CD burning utilities or third party defragment programs such as Perfect Disk. 4.Make sure your computer is updated (devices and applications). 5.Disconnect any external devices before installing. 6.Check your hard disk for any errors: - Click Start - Type: CMD - Right click CMD then click Run as administrator At the Command Prompt, type: chkdsk /r /f Exit the command prompt. When you restart your system, your computer will be scanned for errors and attempts will be made to correct them. 7.Another thing you can do is disable Start items: •Click Start •Type: MSCONFIG. •Hit Enter on your keyboard •On the General tab, click Selective Startup. •Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box. •Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All. •Click OK. •When you are prompted, click Restart. •After the computer starts, check whether the problem is resolved. Run the System File Checker utility. SFC/Scannow checks your Windows installation for errors and corrects them. This will help with ensuring that a smooth upgrade occurs. Click Start
noob question : what are the downsides if i install the 10240 build now as an upgrade to my official windows 8.1?
Finally nailed the problem. It wasn't KB3074667 but it might have caused this problem. For some reason it changed my power profile and set it to power save mode. I was going through events log and found this The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device ROOT\WPD\0000. Further investigation revealed that the power profile was incorrectly set to power save mode. Changing it back to normal/performance solved the problem. However, as per my previous post uninstalling KB3074667 did improve the system performance. So I am going to install it back and see if it makes a difference
Yes! I done this path on my netbook. My COA sticker was a little faded but i had saved the numbers in a .txt file a while ago, it was genuinely activated, then I upgrade it to 10074. Now i'm in 10240 and still activated. Home version tho.
advise me please , Laptop only has 32 gig ssd and windows 8.1 is installed there i cant upgrade to 10 cause of space issue i have to do a clean install of the os , i would like to pull the activation from my 8.1 key. So i was thinking to install 8.1 on the 750 gig hdd and then upgrade to win 10 will have the activation then how would i go about putting that activation on the SSD OS ?
Also interesting while messing around looking for a offline method found the phone activation did not like my installation ID and wanted to transfer me to an operator. I then went online and it activated no problem despite swapping data.dat and changing my PK. So if I was to jump to conclusions it would appear a hardware change will require you to explain it to and operator for the GWX free upgrade path. Possibly the telephone activation system didn't get my correct installation ID.
Yeah, got the OEM key from bios now just have to find what version of Windows 8 came with this laptop and download the iso, upgrade, then clean install Pro....I guess. Probably easier to stick with Enterprise 10 via KMS
hi. my laptop has win8.1 oem. I upgraded to win10 using the 10240 ISO. after the upgrade, i checked activation status of win10 and it says that it is activated. I restarted my laptop and booted from the win10 DVD to launch a fresh install. Installing a fresh copy is no problem. when i boot to this fresh install, i can connect to internet, install all drivers, doing windows updates, etc, but the activation status keeps 'not activated' . Is there something i miss here? Is there a delay I have to keep in mind?
But then can i do a clean install of 10 on the ssd and sign in to the MS account and will be activated ? rather have the OS on the ssd than the 750 gig hdd.
