An in-place upgrade is basically when you're installing the same version over the top of your existing installation. It's sometimes done to (try to) iron out kinks in the system, often as a last resort before just going for a clean install - in fact it's sometimes known as a 'repair' install. In the case of the 19042 build, the files are actually 19041 plus the enablement package that makes it pretend to be 19042, which is maybe why an in-place upgrade fails, because the system 'pretend' version is higher than the one you're trying to install.
Seems to work now for 19042 builds. Does definitely NOT work anymore for dev builds (redirects to the modern clunky version).

MS was late in giving MVS users the .508 ISOs, cuteee don't know if they'll get the .572 ISOs next week
Ah, I understand the term "repair" install because most software developers use it. But why on earth do some people call it an "in-place" upgrade? The term "upgrade" implies that one is installing a higher version than the one that is currently on the system. Thanks for your clear and concise explanation.
The term inplace should imply it's a same build > same build upgrade. MSFT calls normal upgrades "Feature Updates", go figure

i have tested media creation tool it givs me windows 10 enterprise to download edited it with msgm toolkit for Education Edition. but why 1.winver =19041. 450 instead of latest build 2.kb4579311 update error failed to install i think its better to download latest build from uppdump? as newbie do we have to download the whole iso each time a new build has released?
im downloading now from uudump instead why kb4579311 fails to install online generally to update windows from build to build we have to download new iso ?
Installed without issue although I got the bug where after reboot it wants to install again. As usual the 2nd install is very fast and does not require a reboot.
I have no clue why it fails for you, the MCT already downloads the 19042.572 ESD, to create the 19042.572 ISO and that is including the mentioned update.
