Just edited the registry and I got the regular esd file, converted to iso no problems. Have been using the same key for at least the last 10 or so builds. Starting update process now.
Yea this new UUP update method doesn't seem to need any waiting time at all, I was offered it immediately too, but as soon as I used the reg to go back to normal ESD method, nothing offered
Yesterday, with a newer insider build with UUP, it doesn't work. I left the computer 12 hours and always the computer was Up to date. In some countries UUP doesn't work as expected.
I remember you seem to have problems getting new builds quite often even without UUP? MS have a lot of work to do to get things rolling out smoothly, it's a mess atm
Now i've installed 14971 again, did the reg trick manually (when i used the regfile, i believe it only did the upper line, not the second, doing a vm install to test). Logged in at the insider part. Windows Update only found the defender update. Shutting that system down for the night, tomorrow i'll see what gets offered
I think I got some redistrib update (Always disable defender from group policy after first boot) I checked the registry and it had changed both entries, rebooted and checked for updates, no build Just a guess but I think UUP is on a different update method to full ESDs
I initially got the update using the new UUP but never tried installing it. I deleted the download folder in windows update, did the reg edit and ran windows update again. This time it downloaded the regular esd file. Converted that to an iso, upgraded my build without any problems.
Nah, i leave defender running, it shows me WU is working when it downloads the definitions Just confirmed the reg file does it's job properly I will undo it, and test what naseap says he did.
Defender mucks about too much IMO, flags MTK, takes an age to tell it to ignore it, seems to want to scan everything so thoroughly and slowly it becomes a bottleneck for the OS, and last review I read it came close to last in detection rates anyway For VMs / test machines I don't bother with AV, machines that I don't use for anything critical / important passwords / banking etc, I just leave them naked
I've tried to reproduce this and i can say it doesn't work. Installed 14971 Pro x64 en-US Logged in at the insider app Started WU and it downloaded 14986 100% Stopped WU service Deleted SoftwareDistribution folder Used the reg file Started the WU service It only downloaded the defender definitions
My adventure with the new UUP: Yesterday I enabled Fast Ring on build 14971. Today just after booting to desktop I did open Settings and build 14986 was there waiting with a 0% without me needing to check for updates. After 30 minutes the 0% was still there but looking at task manager I saw how Delivery Optimization service was using the CPU. 4 hours later a button "Install now" appeared. At that moment $Windows.~BT folder size is only 70Mb and SoftwareDistribution has a 1,5Gb file inside. After pressing the button and waiting for 20 minutes the $Windows.~BT folder is now ~2Gb. It asks me to restart PC. After 40 minutes and 3 restarts it updated successfully to build 14986. So the only thing I noticed is it takes much more time to start downloading the build. It seems like it's first checking the files on the system and then downloads the different .esd files. Maybe in next week build we will really notice a speed up when downloading the new bits.
