I tried Start Is Back on Windows 8.1 and it worked -- sort of. But there were problems. I haven't tried it on Win 10. But that's irrelevant. The fact that I have to install an additional program so I can get back functionality, because it was removed, is the issue. Microsoft has their head so far up their *** with this nonsense of 'make everything look like a phone or tablet', it's ridiculous. For many years, I've always installed the newest version of Windows as soon as it was available. But, unless they make some major changes to Windows 10, I see myself staying with Windows 7 for a very long time.
Metamorphosis from 8 > 10 is not finished yet though ... You might see some cute things when it RTMs one day
Since Microsoft is saying Windows 10 will be available in "summer" that means General Availability, RTM is always 2-3 months before GA, so we're talking TWO more months tops for RTM. It shouldn't be RTMed until Q1-Q2 2016. Its not even alpha quality IMO.
Hello, Sorry if this is a dumb question. I've been searching here and elsewhere, and can't find an answer... Is there a way to install Windows Media Center on these recent builds? I was able to do so on one of the early builds, using my legit 8.1 Pro w/Media Center product key, but that no longer works. Thanks for any help, Mike
For anyone having issues safely removing USB 3.0 drives: I got a new USB 3.0 drive and have never been able to safely remove so far during my testing of this build. It was always tied up with another process and no matter what I tried, I could never successfully remove it safely. Anyway, I dug into the issue some more and found out that it was explorer.exe that it was tied up with and causing it to not allow me to safely remove the device. I sent feedback to MS, but also figured out a workaround that I believe is safe. I remembered the programs ExitExplorer and RestartExplorer from winaero.com from a little while ago and I also remember the developer saying that it was a safe way for restarting the explorer.exe process. So I ensure that all programs are closed and nothing going on with the USB 3.0 device, open Task Manager and use the run option in TM with admin privileges to run RestartExplorer program. Surely, users could alternatively follow command lines for restarting the explorer.exe process instead of using the RestartExplorer program. After restarting the explorer.exe process, the tray icon for removing devices successfully and safely allowed me to remove the USB 3.0 device. The problem is reproducible for me, and luckily the workaround is working consistently as well.
Not trying to be a smart-@ss but you do know that "summer" does not end until Sept 21th If I remember correctly, win 8 was RTM'ed in Aug for an Oct release.
Thanks! I also had problems with this, USB drive always "tied up", as you said. Thanks for this workaround, I hope this issue is solved in future builds. I normally use "USB disk ejector" by "Quick and Easy software" (freeware, I tied it to ctrl-sh-E), but as expected, this didn't work in 10041 either. Thanks again!
Like prepping for lawsuits from Samsung, Google, Budweiser, Apple, Sony, Motorola, Blackberry, Heineken, General Foods, Audi, Honda, Ford, and The Rhode Island School of GOOD Design.
agree with a lawsuit against Budweisers and Heineken but I cannot see problems with all others. The beer gets worst day by day and I know what I'm talking about. Rhode Island stuff is too far away
Like I said, 2-3 months. Aug is 2 months prior to Oct. I averaged the time between RTM and GA for XP up to 8.1 and came up with "2-3 months" 3 months before 9/21 is 6/21, hence why I said June.
My bad...I forget not everybody is where I am... The Rhode Island School of Design is a well known in this area. My adding the GOOD was in reference to all the pizzing and moaning about the UI design. I'm going to my room now and look for a new wife.........
