GDI leak and consequent crashes stopped for me after I turned off "Use Windows 7 Taskbar Features" in Media Player Classic. Keeping my fingers crossed.
That is interesting. It means the problem you have been experiencing regarding crashes is more of third party software rather than the default. I had a video converter crashes lately only to find out that they are caused by wrong encoding in two of the videos I try to convert. Graphic Device Interface is a complicated application that sometimes behave funny. Thank you for pointing that out.
I believe that much more than 50% of the crashes are 3.party related! It is simply normal that way because many of the 3.party Developers beginning late or even after RTM which the needed changes to their software and they're even not willing to closely work with MS together! That you could also see in the fact's that still most of the new Apps are 32bit only, even if the developer says 32bit & 64bit, just while it gets only the 32bit installed! From my point of view that's the developers of the 3.party software who're forcing most of problems while running on an not 100% supported OS! Same applies for drivers!
As stated several times the so-called GDI Leak is directly connected to Programs that use Taskbar to show the progress. Can be browsers, movie players and others using this feature.
totally agree. the link posted by @s1ave22 in reply to my post explains it completely. fortunately my choice of media player has the option to disable progress in taskbar and for the first time since 9879 came out, i'm not feeling left out. i have the latest 9888 build installed without any problems
Credits go to others who already posted the explanation/solution. Unfortunately those post drown sometimes, and therefor need some messengers to spread properly .
Can anyone successfully installed latest Intel HD&Iris Graphic Drivers(15.28.22.64.3517) to 9888? When i'm trying to install it(15.28.22.64.3517), it gives "Your system does not meet minimum requirements". In addition, compability mode hasn't helped. So, I installed previous version without problem, but latest driver is more stable than the driver which I installed. (My graphics processor is HD4400) Edit: Sorry for wrong version number, correct version is "15.36.7.64.3960"
If I am correct, GDI leak happens when application makes use of many GDI objects which can lead to error, crash, etc . Despite stating that, almost all applications use the Taskbar(so that is not all by itself the only explanation for the problem) and many would respond very well without coming up with errors when managing or compensating for the memory by being a lightweight applications. There is a reason for me to say the GDI is complicated than just using the Taskbar but also due to object handling limit, etc.
Wasn't talking about the fact that apparantly a running program appears at tastbar, but about those that use the taskbar to show the progess of a running process/download, ie. Browsers, video/audio players .... . EDIT: One member already stated that disabling that 'Win 7 Feature' inside a tool solved the problem for him .
I quite agree with you, sir. But, what I am saying at this point in time(looking back on what my previous message is all about)is that GDI leak is issue beyond programs using the Taskbar to show the progress running on a system. Which I think is not the only cause of the issue. On the edit, I read that and it is clear you are correct on what causes the problem in his case or in most cases. Further more, I think GDI leak is more than that.
In Folder Options / View tick Launch folder windows in a separate process to retain any open windows when forced to restart Explorer main process when GDI handles reach 10000. * only affects windows opened after the option was applied, if you had windows already opened, they are in the main process.
Needed a short moment to get the clue . Indeed good tip. Realized i should update the Known-Bugs part of the REPO. [done]
