So funny to see this ''move to linux or be left behind''.. 5 years ago it was ''move to mac or be left behind'' and 10 years ago it was ''move to linux or be left behind''..... The circle of OS bigotry life ladies and gentlemen. Windows is, and always will be, the human races number 1 choice of OS in our lifetime...and probably that of my great great great great grandchildrens lifetime too.
Honestly, the only reason I use Windows still is games, and Linux is catching up big time in-regards to that as of recently. Wine suffices enough for some games, but Path of Exile and Guild Wars 2 last I checked were still problematic (poor performance mainly), and those are two games I'd like to have the ability to play. The casual end-user could probably easily replace Windows with a popular Linux distro without much hassle at all. Give them a somewhat familiar interface like KDE, or maybe an easy-to-use one like Unity, provide the basic applications (browser, some games, office suite; most distros already have this stuff out-the-box), give a quick tutorial on how some aspects work, and all should be well. But the problem with desktop Linux isn't that it's hard to use; it's that it's hard to get initially started with. I doubt someone like my mom is going to go grab a Linux disc image, burn it to a DVD or write it to a flash drive, boot it up, and install it (note, she has no idea how to do any of this nor the will to go do it). On the other hand, if I throw Linux onto her laptop; she'd use it without any real issue (I say real because a few games have given some trouble under Linux in the past). But yeah, for casual people who don't play games (or can play the ones Linux provides), I really can't see Linux not being able to replace Windows. Such users would just have to be exposed to it though.
It's not that it's the choice, it's the choice that has been shoved down our throats, by heavily funded marketing.
Yea Linux is good for servers etc, but the guy was claiming that if the next Windows workstation OS fails that Linux would take over - which is complete BS, people would rather run XP than Linux if all Windows OSs since XP suddenly vanished No doubt as you say *nix is here to stay, but it will never be a mainstream workstation / home OS, if Microsoft went under and took all ISOs from the world with them, people would move to MacOS not Linux, albeit pretty similar under the hood, but much more user friendly UI/interaction/usability - Linux is a tech-heads play thing / coders toy, not a dumb users home OS I know my way around Linux enough to get by using it 24/7 if I chose to, but after about 30 mins of using *nix, I want to kill my PC
At least Linux is open. Apple isn't exactly a saint either. You give Apple enough market share, they will slack off more so than any other company. This is the reason why we hear about iPhone, iPad because of their low market share of Mac OS X back in 2007. With the majority switching to Linux, there'll be no bully. If Ubuntu bullies us, we'll switch to CentOS, same kernel, same everything, just a different distro. This is what's great about competition.
Open doesn't mean jack when it comes to usability The majority? LMAO, no, unless you live in a house with 10 people and 9 of them move to Linux, the Majority are not moving to Linux, they are staying with Windows
Never say never. If MS screws up Windows 10, Photoshop may be moving to Linux over time and eventually the whole industry. This is MS's last chance to make it right. Believe what you want. Bottom line is, Windows 10 should have a bi-weekly release for Windows Insiders on Fast Rings. Why create fast rings when nothing have been release since mid-Nov 2014!! It's Jan 15 already and we see absolutely nothing! Fast ring my crack insider bum.
No. I have no idea why Neowin posted this article, it isn't news. 9901 has been able to do this since it leaked, there is nothing which indicates that 9918 or 9916 is the JTP, it likely isn't.
Ignore that Neowin post, it doesn't mean anything, there have been a bunch of builds both on the slow and fast ring, nothing abnormal, nothing important!
