Totally agree with this, HUGE letdown. And we don't know what day which is kind of cruel, keeping us on the edge of our seats for the next 7 days.

True, it would have made much more sense (and I would have preferred) if they held this briefing one week later and have a build ready instead of this async mess. But I guess that's what happens when you constantly try to deliver faster and faster, you just don't have any buffer when something unexpected happens. And I don't buy the idea that they planned to do it this way (presentation today, delivery one week later) right from the start.

Agree - faster seems to be more important in this day and age than anything else.

To come back to the one-year-for-free-upgrade story for a moment: I wonder if this could be a hint that they indeed are moving to a subscription based licensing model for (consumer) Windows. I mean, you could read this statement that it sounds like the free one-year subscription you get for Office 365 from OEMs these days, now applied to Windows.

Common sense seems to be luxury for a lot of people these days. And now, even for companies. Pathetic beyond words.

I think it meant it'll be a free upgrade for the first year the OS is out. So if you wait 400 days after Windows 10 comes out, and you want it; you'll have to buy it. But if you wanted Windows 10 100 days after it launched, then you can have it for free.

But it's not entirely clear what was meant.

Don't forget that they had to pre-announce this event sufficiently due to the dozens or hundreds of people traveling to it from around the country if not the world. They tried to skate to where the puck was going to be, and they misjudged a bit. The alternative was to get a build all set and then schedule the event a couple weeks out from that.

Then people would have complained about getting an "old" build.

That's the point. Anyway, I was surprised they shared information in this regards today. I didn't expect to hear anything about the upgrade story just yet.

They should have given out a USB stick with the Consumer Preview to everyone in attendance there and open up the gates to us Insiders along with the event, in my opinion. They got so much hype going for it with this event. A week from now the hype will be less than it is today.
