    Try a clean install. Boot from the DVD and install from scratch.

    What specs did you put in for the VM?

    Mine keeps telling me that the hardware isn't supported.

    this build rocks, nice to get new sounds after so many years, new animations, very smooth and fast install, quicker than other versions, lovely initial setup screens

    Everyone with the unsupported hardware message...Try Clean installing on physical hardware.

    It's a bug. It only happens when installing or upgrading from within Windows desktop. A clean install should fix it.

    Just the usual default ones in VMWare. Gave 8 GB RAM and 8 cores (I have an AMD Ryzen 9 3900XT). After installation, be sure to install VMWare Tools to enable at least basic hardware acceleration.
