The .msu itself is now a .wim and no longer a .cab file. WU also downloads the .msu as .wim.

 

So what's needed to changed in convert-uup.cmd?

after several tests I've found out that LCU MSU itself is indeed WIM file and converter just can't detect it because it's not MSU (cab?) now
possible solution is try to detect it by MSU extension and if it's WIM file then try to extract SSU from it using 7-zip
after that it should integrate LCU MSU as usual


also W10UI can't extract SSU from new LCU MSU (WIM) and it's not trying to integrate new LCU MSU even with manually extracted SSU

it should try to extract SSU from detected LCU MSU as WIM file and then integrate LCU MSU

no idea how to extract something from WIM without 7-zip
wim could be mounted for that or you can embed some extractor's binary in the W10UI script

I use expand.exe to detect if the msu file contain .psf file (i.e. UUP msu)
since now it's wim file, i need to adjust that

similar for W10UI, it cannot detect UUP msu or extract SSU from it

for convert-UUP.cmd we can use wimlib-imagex.exe or 7z.exe to detect or extract new wim msu
but for W10UI.cmd it will more difficult (no external binaries to use)

- copy the files
- unmount it

if mount success ...
its wim file

if not ..
not wim file

and you can use built-in dism

It looks like Microsoft is now saying goodbye to .cab files in updates, especially since in Windows 11 22H2 the .cab file of zhe LCU is reaching it's limit. Assume that the new format will be used in Windows 11 (22621) very soon.

But if they now switch to .wim, then they could now also omit the .psf, especially there is no longer any real reason for this.

Without additional tools, this will probably only be possible via mounting the image or extracting the whole .msu with dism.

Or we can extract .wim using 7-zip into a temporary working directory named after the update like "Windows11.0-KB5026292-x64" then create the cab file by right clicking on directory and using DXTool's cab tool. After which you can use @abbodi1406's repack tool to create a full cab file.

Yes you can also use the MSU creation tool as well, instead of using the Repack tool if update exceeds cab limits.

 

DISM should be able to install new LCU MSU directly, so we just need to extract SSU from it and that's all
