Skype 5.8 is crashing on me with the Windows 8 CP. Had to fix it by deleting it entirely and going back to 5.3.
It still has it, and you could always just unplug it on the fly.. this feature simply made sure that nothing is writing or reading from the stick anymore, but it's missing from Metro.
You could always try the traditional Control Panel to view installed updates, right click on them, and follow the link to the KB article. 2680376 had something to do with Office and traditional Chinese 2680354 was for IE10 2680328 was for Media Center 2680358 was for Broker Infrastructure Service (bisrv.dll)
For those having metro apps turned to German! Had same problem, but changing system locale from Estonian to English, solved the problem! (Control Panel-Clock, Language and Region-Region-Administrative-Change system locale) Good luck with testing!
One thing I liked very much about the Windows 7 Start menu was, that you could pin Jumplist capable programs to it and quickly launch a document or spreadsheet (I have Word and Excel pinned to my Start menu for just that reason). This functionality is gone now completely. Jumplists are only on the Taskbar. That's more than only a step back, it really complicates my workflow! The constant switching between the two surfaces - metro and desktop - may be practical on a tablet-PC, but it's so completely unnecessary for a desktop system with a large monitor. For me metro isn't ugly, not at all, but it simply isn't practical! I like to get to all my stuff with as less as possible mouse clicks. I dislike using more than a few keyboard shortcuts and I really dislike to type program names to open an application - I don't want the DOS times back. Windows 8 may be technically better than windows 7, but the usability on a desktop PC is a no go for me. If they don't change a lot in this point, it will be the second MS OS I'll skip (the first one was ME).
Nothing for me. They have to implement an option to configure metro (yes/no) and a working start menu including button. If not this is nothing for me. Support of W7 has been extended to 2020. So, relax.
Is it just me or aren't my desktop settings getting saved ? Everytime I restart all my icons getting rearanced...
How do you remove "hibernatfil.sys" ? It took 8MB for nothing (Don't use it). Using CMD then "powercfg -h off" command is refused. Maybe not enough privileges, is there a way ?
How to make all programs run with administrator rights by default? UAC already is disabled, my user is admin. ie. installed Winrar this sec, but .rar extension was not associated because this lack of admin rights. In Windows 7 is so simple, just need to disable UAC.
UAC seems to be hard baked into Metro, disabling it (you need to do this via Registry and restart) will make MEtro applications no longer work as they will cry that UAC has to be enabled... sucks pretty hard Code: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System] "EnableLUA"=dword:00000000
Well, metro application are working fine here, after to disable UAC. I just need administrator rights by default, if someone has the solution let us know!
Try to open any software that requires framework 3.5, Windows 8 will offer auto download and install.
for some reason fast boot does not seem to work for me, i enabled and disabled it makes no difference, dev preview was so much faster, anyone getting same prob as me??
-How to make aerolite transparent in CP, try this: -open the 'Personalization' window TWICE (settings->personalization) -make sure you have the normal aero-theme enabled, not lite -click the 'Window Color' button in ONE of the personalization windows, the 'Window Color and Appearance' window should open -use the OTHER personalization window to switch to 'Windows Basic' theme -uncheck the transparency checkbox in the 'Window Color and Appearance' window you opened before, then check it again, select any color, press save.
