    Hi guys

    Zorin just saved my bacon.

I have three PCs running Mint, over the last few years I have upgraded from 21 to 22 without a fresh reinstall. I decided the other day to install Windows on my laptop, an Asus machine that is to all intents and purposes a sealed product. I wanted a Windows PC as I have friends and relations who use Windows and occasionally ask for help, I felt I was getting out of touch with Windows and wanted a machine to practice on. What should have been a simple swap became a bit of a nightmare, the Windows installation USB failed to find the HDD despite numerous attempts using different tools [Ventoy etc]. Windows required a driver that does not exist. I gave up and decided to reinstall Linux, Mint and others failed but not Zorin, there is something in the installer that is different to the others that made the installation simple and straight forward. Once Zorin was installed I tried Windows again without success but other Linux distros were again recognised. Zorin looks great but I prefer Mint, I began installing Mint 22.3 but it was so slow and hung for ages so I switched to LMDE7, this was incredibly fast to boot from the USB Drive and installed in minutes.

I looked up my Kingston HDD, the problem I had is common and occurs out of the blue for people running the original OS provided by the manufacturer. SSDs have their own issues, had this been a tower PC I could have swapped the HDD for a few quid but I had to persevere with this one. The moral of the story is keep a Zorin USB stick handy as a repair tool and LMDE is without doubt the best version of Mint.
