I read through this topic and though I would try to install Macrium home on server 2022. Worked Great. But since it is a Hyper-V VM test machine I used MAS 1.6 to activate. When I ran the slmgr /ipk <ent> and rebooted it came up as a workstation and Macrium installed. But when I went to revert back to server it failed with serial number not valid. I re-booted and checked activation, no serial number. I noticed there was no Edition also. So ran MAS again and hit digital activation by mistake and it took it. Now I have a server 2022 Datacenter with a digital License. If I right click on This PC I get workstation computer management, but in "add remove programs" lets me install any server feature that is fully functional. I like the OS, as it is workstation, but with all the benefits of server. I was able to add the MS store, updates are working. I am sure it wiould go back to server if I had a valid serial number, but this is too fun. Thank you for posting this tutorial. PS One slight change from Post #127. I didn't use pro sku/certs, I used enterprise and that I figure got me Datacenter as I started with standard.
You're welcome. Thanks for sharing back your further findings. Well that happens when the product policies is still convinced it's a client machine. That's why I suggested, when going from Server to Enterprise, to do that in two steps Server > Pro > Enterprise. For some reasons Enterprise (and other editions) don't migrate fully the machine status. I guess it's related to the fact enterprise is a virtual SKU, while Pro is a fully fledged image. I think you faced the same effect in the opposite direction. I bet that in the actual status you can run many server roles, but not Domain controller. Out of curiosity launch the product policy editor and check the DCPromoEnabled value, I'm sure is = 0 Also other server values like the maximum memory is still stuck on client's value, and the maximum SMB connections is still limited to 20, like on clients machines.
Last time I used the store on a server machine (3/4 years ago) it was on a client PC turned to HyperCore, to install Ublock Origin for Edge (legacy). The store worked but wanted a MS account to download the application, while in Client mode it installed "no question asked".
As usual there is someone who read my messages and do 1% of the work seeking for 100% of the credit. A movie already watched...
I'm also using server 2022 at home as a desktop, the doubt is do you think server 2022 converted into a workstation on a top machine, say ryzen 7950x with rtx 3090ti would go faster in all games using win server 2022 or windows 11 would give more fps?
That's easy to verify. Just deploy win11 in a native vhdx, dual boot to it and do your comparison. It's matter of less than 5 minutes on a fast machine, like a ryzen 7950 using a good NVME drive. In the same way you can add more OS to compare, Server 11, win 10, win 8.1 and so on... When you are done you may want to recover the space, something that requires 1 file to delete.
what kind of FPS are you getting? I mean... you have high end components... I'm sure those additional 5fps are going to make a difference... This isn't the 80's,90's where a jump from 15 fps to 20, or 30fps is huge
Ok, I'm not the author but I'll give you the creds in the comments, you deserve that much Thanks for figuring this out.
