Codec pack, tried them all, best is 007 Shark Codecs package, works perfectly for WMP on Win7 x64.

WMP and WMC play any file I throw at it, from mobile 3gp to HD MKV files.

VLC then plays anything that the above has issues with (say a crappily encoded video that pixelates or stutters)

To follow from the above poster, CCleaner is a cert.

    Spywareblaster
Spybot: Search & Destroy (turn off tea timer, its great for security but bottlenecks the PC)

    Maybe Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
    and SuperAntiSpyware Free

Apologies for not linking, im just too lazy atm.

Each users essential software will be different as people hardly ever use exactly the same combinations as someone else. Mine for example:

Firefox + Adblock + NoScript + Greasemonkey + Screengrab + DownThemAll + Web Developer + New Tab Homepage + Glasser
    Adobe Flash Player
    VirtualBox
    7-Zip
    Universal Extractor
    CCleaner
    Notepad++
    VLC Media Player
    Spotify
    EasyBCD
    HashCheck
    Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0
    REAL Studio
    FileZilla Portable
    Pidgin Portable
Avira, Avast! or Microsoft Security Essentials (Manual scans only)

With the above I get everything done and the system runs pretty quick as I have no extra services or tasks eating up memory. I don't need any "tweaker" software on any of my systems which often disables important services or messes up the registry. In my books they're all crap and nothing beats doing it manually ;)

Exactly !!, and that was the reason why i was not willing to add application softwares as its differs from user to user..But then, its always nice to have a list of all the softwares at once place which you can refer to when you need them, and thats the reason why i created this thread..

    Hi,
Im new here - great resource this website forum is!
Just like to add Foobar to the list.
Its free, lightweight and has a multitude of plugin dll's that better playback, conversion/encoding than any other players I have used, and also has a kernel streaming plugin that bypasses the windows operating system completely giving much better quality sound.
