moderate, your setup looks sick. Could you tell me the benefits of using refs? Also, how much memory will I save if I turn metro off? Im a huge fan of performance.

IMHO,i like WindowsServer2012 x64 way better than Win8 and Win7 ,i have not had any driver issues, video editing is flawless, audio editing is superb,Gaming is great,at least NSF SHIFT is,which is the only pc game i play  and in reality,if you have top notch hardware .i.e.=i5,i7,8gb+,above average GPU,the OS should not be the bottleneck

You look sick too (with your 22 posts, novice) :D
BTW: Didn't they teach you in school, that you should act more politely, when you are fresh new "member" somewhere...? ;)
Data is much more protected on ReFS drive, but google for ReFS youself, maybe you don't need data security at all, because you will simply re-download the porn when NTFS drive will fail:)
I don't have turned Metro off (as I like running apps by typing in Metro), I just unpinned Metro apps as they can't be used when UAC is turned off...
...so I have the 10-15 main desktop apps there in Metro and Immersive Control Panel...
...if you are performance fan, rather buy new machine :D
...well, still W8 starts 30% faster than W7 thanks to Hybrid boot... :))

    1. Start Menu sux, I am happy, that MS killed it (typing in Start Menu is stupid, because you need to type exact command (in Run dialog) and why to type at plain indexing service for running app (what will initiate whole indexing database for all indexing allowed drives)?, in Metro three or four chars are sufficient and indexing is almost not used).
    2. I already use Process Explorer, but most people doesn't know it exist, btw: process explorer is far from perfection same as Mark Russinovich and his huge ego (I remember his hysteria, when Daemon Tools makers did prove him, that his "Rootkit Revealer" is good only for <CENSORED> :D
    3. Why they should be DX 11.1 games available, when W8 doesn't started to sell yet? They will be in time of course...
    4. Chrome hehe. Twice stolen API (1st by Apple from KDE, 2nd by Google from WebKit)... If fact I don't know more stupid application as Chrome, which even can't place tabs to multiple rows, because it has stability issues with more then 40 opened tabs. I use Opera but IE is most secure browser today, where any issue is patched within the month.
    5. NDIS, WDDM, your comment is stupidity colosal :) as you can calmly use old drivers written for former versions, even Pre-WDDM (XPDM) drivers...
    6. Ribbon is intuitive and speed ups the work specially when you use new application (but maybe you like search in menus instead) (desktop space, common, it is like 120 pixels in height or so on the today moderns Full-HD it is nothing) How much will you reserve for control elements of the application? 10pxs? :) (You are probably one of those guys, who hide taskbar too.) :D
    7. While Hybrid boot is OK and compatibility will be improved in time, Creative isn't, in fact it seems that Creative Labs never knew how to create stable drivers at all... Creative is obsolete today as normal users will have Realtek HD audio and pro will have Asus Xonar... Creative worked "hard" to make Recon3D, which is even worse than its old X-Fi (only 5+1, worse frequncy chars, etc, etc.) With the final version of Recon3D they packed the drivers, which has "Alpha drivers warning" in inf comments... :) They are joke... Ahh, they were my 1st sound-card (SB-Pro), but today...
    8. Not necessary? You are kidding. ReFS is major improvement in data security. And this should be rather geeks forum than "home users" as BFUs have no reason to look here at all.
    9. CHKDSK and "online" checking is handy, it doesn't depend how often it is used, as I am beta tester, I use CHKDSK after every BSOD (and there were many with W7 testing)...

BTW1: It looks like that WXP (and maybe even W2000) is quite sufficient for you.
BTW2: Aero is overrated, transparent taskbar is just enough, what is an advantage to have transparent 3mm of frame-borders? I am happy, that MS killed Aero with its regular randomly buggy switching back to Basic mode.

Maybe because you have a touched iso instead of a untouched one

With Vista i would agree but with Windows 7 i don't. Companies supported Windows 7 from day 1 (even in beta stage).

If you think Windows 8 is perfect, then why tweak it ?

Probably helps if you read what you linked to:

"In summary, I'm excited about Windows 8 and am confident that existing Windows users will feel the same after they have had a chance to use it."

The fact that he pointed out some problems doesn't change his overall conclusion. Is 8 perfect? Lord no, but it's hardly the pariah you make out.

"Windows 8 does certainly require a brief adjustment period before users become familiar and comfortable with the new bimodal operating system.

Desktop PC users, with only minor tweaks and adjustments, should be able to pick things up without much trouble. I am sure most the minor issues I pointed out will be addressed in the next release of the operating system. And it won't be long until third party developers become more familiar with Windows 8 and begin to create and distribute applications that help smooth out many of remaining rough edges. In fact, I noticed that a clock application has already been developed that places a live tile with the current time directly on the Start screen. I'm sure that we can expect many exciting apps soon that take advantage of these live Start screen tiles.

I'm particularly excited about the prospects for Windows 8 on a tablet. The tablet interface is elegant, responsive, and stacks up nicely with other tablets on the market. And with its capability to optionally switch to desktop view right on the tablet, Windows 8 extends to mobile users the flexibility to run traditional applications and become more efficient and productive while on the go.

Touch seems a natural progression in the evolution of operating systems, and I'm confident that Windows 8 offers the best of legacy Windows features with an eye toward a very promising future."

    lol.

To me the main problem of Windows 8 is that it's a horrible mixture of Metro and classic. Microsoft is honestly trying their best to mix the two but the result is very bad.

For example, create a VPN connection in Windows 8. You'll have to access it using the Metro interface. It's horrible.

In Windows 7 you had a normal window dialog where you could easily copy and paste a long password that you had in PasswordSafe, for example (an application to store passwords)

But Windows 8 has this stupid Metro screen that will disappear as soon as you try to click somewhere else. Making it difficult and cumbersome something that used to be simple.

Having some settings in Metro and others in classic mode is very inconsistent, confusing and looks like a half-assed job.

Hey GameDev. Drivers problems are not Microsoft or Windows 8's fault. Technically speaking, the OS is not launched yet. When it's finally released, then all companies who made devices (compatible with 7) should deliver drivers for Windows 8. I got drivers for all my devices, from Intel, AMD and Realtek. Other (unlucky) people must keep waiting for the right drivers. And stop defending Aero, it's just a visual effect :D

Can't really see how much clearer I could of made it frankly. I read Allen's post in full some time back (and apparently understood it).

I can still overall like Windows 7 (quite a lot) even if some aspects of it's GUI aren't perfect - e.g. the horrible clunky start menu folders or the complete lack of mouse support in explorer. Pulling specifics out of someone else's blog to support your 'view' and ignoring context doesn't a solid argument make..

Thank you - that's actually constructive - and I agree this is where things are confusing. For me - luckily - I rarely see this in what I do (we use teamviewer anyway). I'm not sure whether replicating things in both the traditional desktop and the MUI would of been better (probably) but I suspect without that you'd end up pushing everything into MUI logically. There is 'docking' in MUI but I don't really like how that's implemented for mouse users and it's quite restrictive. All that said, i'm spending 99% of my time outside of MUI entirely (and with no 'tweaks' required) anyway.
