I too can join the Windows 7 64bit explorer.exe crashing club. I wonder if this could be related to having a second drive (due to spindown which never happened in vista) or having more than 3gb of ram present (which caused no end of problems in vista). I've tried 2 different second drives (a 500gb and a 75gb) and both drives spin down. Windows 7 being a well polished version of vista anyway I guess the beta testing could have done with a few more months. Another explaination could be to do with shell extensions not being 64bit compatable but quite frankly that goes right over my head. creating a new user account seems to resolve the issue, atleast temporarily until you set it up again and file extensions get added, then my windows7 starts explorer.exe appcrash all over again.
Same here, with crashing sometimes on right click, with 64bit win 7. Its something that is annoying at the time, but normally a restart gets rid of it.
Official version of explorer.exe is 6.1.7600.16385 , and nothing else. Patricko has 16384, and Raoul 16404.
It changes when you install updates. Anyways I ran a chkdsk, couple of errors resolved, everything working again.
@Raoul - Glad to hear you are error free now. Still, Servi does bring up a good point. Both 16384 and 16404 are Pre-RTM code. If you downloaded a supposedly "RTM" ISO file, and those versions are what was installed, then you may have gotten a bad/tampered ISO file. Even after running Windows Update and installing all critical updates (as of today), my Explorer.exe version still shows as "6.1.7600.16385". I didn't download/install any leaked Windows Updates for safety reasons. (no offense intended to leaker(s)) If it were me, I would verify your copy of Win7 is full RTM code, before pursuing other possible causes for Explorer.exe crashes. @pc84 - I don't use KIS 2010 currently, due to it not being stable enough under Win7, yet. However, I do use WinRAR almost daily, and have no crashes with it. Back in WinXP, the x86 version of WinRAR would crash/hang Explorer.exe instantly, if I right-clicked a large file (of any file extension). No such problems with WinRAR X64 under Win7 X64. Lastly, WinRAR 3.90 is no longer Beta5. It's officially 3.90 now, so try and update it and see if that solves your Explorer.exe crashes. --DKnight
There are no updates (besides one compatibility update (KB974332))! There is just leaked bulls**t looking like updates.
Many times i am confronted with explorer.exe crashes on my x64 and today i have got a blue screen and then suddenly my system reboots. I have installed all the 31 updates but it just like s**t. I am really sick of it. Tride everything and installed my system maybe 30 times the past 2 months
It depends on whether its the interface explorer.exe process thats crashing, or the file explorer process of explorer.exe If you are talking about loading explorer with Windows already loaded and to view files etc, it could be to do with a context menu (right click) addon. If it only affects folders with any video content in them its probably got to do with an external codec pack. Despite what people claim codec packs are a BAD IDEA, and always have been. DO NOT use any codec pack, regardless of how good people think they are. They usually contain filters that are not needed (which is the case 99 percent of the time) or older versions. Use only FFDshow (latest version), ac3filter, quicktime alternative lite, real alternative lite, matroska splitter. Use all the latest versions. None of these are codec packs, and using them will cover just about every format out there, and won't cause crashes like old crappy codec packs.
Yes, he does. These are unofficial leaked updates, and nobody knows if they are final. Not clever to install such stuff...
Meh, its crashing again. Im gonna try to repair it, so I can backup my files and do a clean install of Windows 7 Professinal. Current windows is f*cked up xD
Don't know if this will help somebody here, but when I installed Shark007 Windows 7 codecs, my explorer always crashed after that. Removed it and went back to CCCP and all my explorer crash disappeared.
I have the same problem from time to time, it's mostly ntdll.dll but sometimes it's ole32.dll ntdll.dll Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 6.1.7600.16404, time stamp: 0x4a765771 Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp: 0x4a5be02b Exception code: 0xc000041d Fault offset: 0x000000000003202d Faulting process id: 0x1488 Faulting application start time: 0x01ca5a4e346a4890 Faulting application path: C:\Windows\explorer.exe Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll Report Id: 73dc39c0-c641-11de-9a46-0022155c73f9 ole32.dll Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 6.1.7600.16404, time stamp: 0x4a765771 Faulting module name: ole32.dll, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp: 0x4a5be01a Exception code: 0xc000041d Fault offset: 0x00000000000fd7d2 Faulting process id: 0x1054 Faulting application start time: 0x01ca5a4e31634a20 Faulting application path: C:\Windows\explorer.exe Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\ole32.dll Report Id: 6fb01c40-c641-11de-9a46-0022155c73f9 I have no idea what might be causing it, but I have a strong guess it's Logitech Setpoint software or it has something to do with my Logitech Bluetooth Hub, but initialy when I installed Setpoint. I'll look into that when I install my Windows 7 from scratch in the next weeks.
All right. I bought full version of Windows7 Ultimate x64 version. And I was really hoping that the problem will dissapear forever. Unfortunately I was so wrong... Explorer.exe is still crashing like hell, and its very annoying. Its either KIS 2010 or just Windows x64 problem. But I dont see any movement from Microsoft to release some fix for that... Im thinking that they dont even know about this problem...
