Have you done any registry mods for the context menu? Look in the event viewer and see what the error report is.
Most probably one (or a combination of) shell extension not really compatible with either Windows 7 or a 64-bit Explorer shell, in this case a context menu handler and maybe a copy handler. Use Nirsoft's ShellExView utility to diagnose, or else you could also re-install Windows from scratch and install apps one by one, testing after each one to find the culprit. A lot of programs install shell extensions, and many do make Explorer crash (especially for 64-bit shells, e.g. CCleaner)
I have moved the explorer.exe to system32 and it made no difference. I'm getting at least 7 explorer.exe crashes a day.
I had the same problem.. Try these and it solved my problem! 1.Uninstall any codec packs installed. 2.Clear all thumbnail cache and delete icons cache in the users folder. 3.Reboot and reinstall your code pack. 4.This solved the problem for me
In my system a couple of weeks ago the context menu of snagit! was the problem. I removed snagit then system run smoothly
When you reinstalled Windows without any updates, what other programmes, seemingly inconsequential or not, did you install? Other things that may affect the ability to right click include antivirus programmes, archive programmes (zip/rar/7z etc), codecs, email clients, among other things. Try doing it with a completely clean install, with an unmodified Windows 7 source disk (the use of a loader is fine), and see if it does the same thing. The other possibility is you may have a virus or other nasty on your computer. Reinstalling Windows, even if formatting the partition for which Windows 7 is on, may not help as you may have other partitions or drives on your computer that are infected, which can automatically reinfect your boot drive even if you don't open the drive specifically. Of course that depends on the virus etc, but remember Windows extracts information from the file for explorer view, for example media files where it not only extract the length and other tag information from the video, but also creates a thumbnail by decoding part of the video.
I also have this issue in Internet Explorer. I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64, but I use IE x86 (well, actually most of the time I use Chrome). Just all of a sudden I get a pop-up stating that Internet Explorer has crashed, but the program still works, without restarting. I don't know if this is possibly related to the explorer.exe problem?
I had the issue with Windows 7 x64 (7600.16385). I found out in another forum that indeed this is due to a Firefox 3.5 bug. And the issues normally show up just AFTER closing Firefox, right clicking somewhere on the desktop. If you have FF 3.5 installed, either you may try to revert back to a previous version, or try to uncheck the Private Browsing option in Tools>Options>Privacy>Automatically start Firefox in a private browsing session. It did work for we. Since then, no crashes anymore.
I've noticed the same thing also in W7 x64 Ultimate, new laptop tested all hardware, all genuine windows only updates. Using firefox but not sure its related. Nothing much else installed apart from AV/firewall security etc
Sorry, I forgot to mention I am using W7 x64 Ultimate too. But it looks like the same happens with Vista x64.
I have the same issue but I can't find the setting they are talking about. In FF -> Extras -> Options -> Privacy I can only adjust my chronik and my adress-bar. help pls.
