Hi guys, can anyone tell if it's recommended to do a clean install before upgraing?

Because of compatibility problems that might come, and what not. Did any of you who upgraded have problems with drivers, any software, or general compatibility problems for that matter?

I assume it would be to upgrade to a higher edition.

What is the version & channel your previous windows 8? Pro, Home, VL, Retail?
You need to match the product key.
If it already same with the key before refresh, then you just need to retry the activation.
If not, then just change it, make it same as the previous. The activation should be automatically then.
You can't use windows 8 key. It's different.

    Windows 8 was SL.
after the windows 10 update (using windows update) i restarted the notebook and i saw it was activated. Key was a generic one and not my win8 key. i wrote down the key.
After that i decided to remove some partition and performed a clean install using the ISO microsoft provided. It asked for keys but i ignored that part.
After windows 10 was instaled i saw that it wasnt activated and the key was another generic one and not the generic that was before after the windows-update update
i tried to change the keys but it wont let me.

I was told that I should wait because the activation servers might be overloaded.
Is it normal that the keys on win10 are generic ones?
    any ideas?

How to get free windows 10 ultimate for everyone.

    1) homebuilt computer.
    a) WITH bios mod. you are good to go. install windows 7 ultimate with trial key, then use daz loader to install proper OEM key and cert. reserve upgrade, upgrade using media creator tool. Optionally keep "nothing" for clean install. you WILL be genuine if you rollback.
    b) without bios mod. SAME PROCEDURE. the windows 10 upgrade will remove the loader, and leave you with a fully activated windows 10 that can be reinstalled forever on that machine. personally tested. :) if you rollback, you will no longer be genuine.

    2) computer that came with windows 7. grab leaked slp ultimate key for your OEM. disconnect from internet, and punch it into windows anytime upgrade. you now have Genuine Windows 7 ultimate for free. reserve free upgrade with get windows 10 thingy. you WILL be genuine if you roll back..

    3) computer that came with windows 8(.1) core. reformat hard drive as MBR. install windows 7 ultimate with trial key. use daz loader. reserve upgrade. install with mediacreationtool(64).exe. Optional steps: create install media using media creation tool. reformat hard drive as GPT, and clean install with installation media. If you reinstall windows 8, you will be genuine. if you rollback to 7, you will not be genuine.

One upgrade is successful, and activated, clean install will work. simply skip the key entry, and you will activate automatically.

you can choose to keep "nothing" during the upgrade. this will be effectively a clean install.

as long as you are able to do the reservation, you WILL get genuine windows 10. You can use either windows update, or the media creation tool to perform the required in place upgrade to confirm your hardware hash.

I'm running a genuine Windows 7 Pro, but I haven't been prompted anything about upgrading to 10. Is there something I need to do? Windows Update says nothing.

If you pass the online genuine check, you aren't getting the offer because MS thinks your computer can't run windows 10.

If this is the case, they are probably right.

    but you can google

troubleshooting tool for get windows 10 app

    and that might help you.

Key is neither language nor architecture specific.

I don't mess with LPs so no answer for this.

@digital_jagh: Authentic key, I guess, don't bother with architecture or OS language.. however you can't upgrade to another language. you can install windows 10 from scratch with FR language.
However fist of all you must upgrade to windows 10 with you authentic key one time befor do this, hope I was clear and sorry for my bad english :(

I must do a clean installation so, orginally in french langague ?!!

Yes. You will remain active, just with a different language. You have English Windows 10 Pro and will do a clean install to French Windows 10 Pro. I did it with Spanish and worked fine. Remember not to enter a key (always hit skip) and do not get anxious about activation once you finish installing, it will activate automatically, just give it time.
