Interesting, I read that the HWID is, with other things, built up with MAC adress so you could have something there.
Might try install win 7, DAZ it, activate, uppgrade to Win 10 and the do a Clean install again if nothing else works

BTW: U should NOT put in a key when doing a clen install, just skip it!!

I updated properly 3 PC from 7/8.1 to 10 without any strange issues.
Now I'm struggling with a Windows 7 SP1 which fails to update to Windows 10 with error:

    0xC1900101 - 0x40017
Installation failed during SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during the BOOT operation (error was in Italian)

Tried with MediaCreationTool and GXN but still same issue, I think this is somehow related to a driver/update because also updating Windows 7 through Windows Update (normal 7 Updates) will lead to a failed boot and automatic restore of Win7.

Situation: I built a new PC from common consumer parts (so it came without any OS or firmware SLIC key for Windows and such, thus completely Windows-virgin in every ways) and I installed a Win10 TP on it which later auto-upgraded to 10240 and seemingly remained permanently activated (this is what slmgr.vbs -XPR says, the GUI simply says it's Activated).

Question: Does this mean I "earned" a free Win10 Pro license by participating in the Insider program?
In other words: Can I wipe the system drive of this PC and do a clean install of Win10 and still get officially activated again (I don't want to do so as long as it runs perfectly fine, "just because clean install seems like a good idea", but I might have to do so if something goes very wrong in the unforeseeable future and tools like CHKDSK, DISM, SFV, etc won't be able to recover the OS...)?

Out of curiosity, I tried to opt out from the Insider program and I noted that my activation state didn't change (I thought it might ask for a retail key right away or at least give me a warning about it but it didn't).

I ask because there were always such rumors. This is why I didn't rush to buy a license for this new PC but started to use it with Win10 TP on the first place (that, and it was rumored to run DX11 games a little faster than Win8). But it feels really strange to me to get a freebee like this so easily, so I am not sure. :)

    Like Gabe stated:
As long you stay Insider you remain activated, but if you opt out, your license will eventually expire. Whatever that means for the future.

So it's not really "permanent" after opting out but there is no way to know the expiration date after you click Stop on Insider upgrades?
That's even more confusing than a free license for some basic beta-testing. But thank you for the input.

Yes it will activate itself after the clean install as long as it was activated before from the upgrade (which will happen also so don't worry).

i have windows 8.1 home (Legit version).. how do I upgrade to windows 10 pro? not windows 10 home version.

Can i upgrade to windows 10 home, then do a clean install with a windows 10 pro iso and it will activate? or is there an easier way to upgrade to the pro version?

    thanks

You can't, that would need to either upgrade to 8.1 Pro (with Upgrade Key) >> Win 10 Pro or go Win 8.1 >> Win 10 Home, then upgrade to pro (with Upgrade Key).

No Free Offer for that Upgrade Path.

Is there any patch (to ntoskrnl.exe, winload.exe) to make possible to install Win10 on an old laptop on which I am missing NX feature on my CPU, but would love to take my laptop from Windows 7 32-bit to Windows 10 32-bit.

    Intel Pentium-M 735 (1.7 GHz 2MB L2),
    Intel 855PM chipset,
    2x512MB DDR333 SO-DIMM,
ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700 128MB external Video RAM,
    Display 15.4” TFT WXGA+
