Not read anywhere yet on 'minimum wait' and would be good to know. Though keeping the internet on during upgrade expedites activation and skipping on new product key input during clean install on same system after upgrade has done the trick so far. Thanks to the servers keeping foot print of earlier activation
donalgodon Just to clarify, is the upgrade activation from 7/8/8.1 going to be possible for one year? I only ask because I didn't wait to upgrade but just did a clean install and activated via KMS. In other words: Is it a better idea to go back to 8.1 and then upgrade to get "official" activation and if so, can I do this at any time in the next year? You can only upgrade from 7 sp1 and 8.1. You have one year from July 29. Personally I would go back to 8.1 and upgrade but of course it's up to you.
That only applies for the upgrade via Windows Update, one can still upgrade Vanilla Win 7 and 8 to Windows 10 via ISO.
Not from what I read. After the 1 year interval is up, no more free upgrades. To be safe. I made an image of my laptop, upgraded it, activated it, then switched back to my old image. This way my w10 activation is stored in MS servers and I can upgrade in the future or do a clean install and I don't need to buy a license. pcworld.com/article/2923867/microsoft-will-charge-for-windows-10-upgrades-after-one-year-freebie-offer-lapses.html forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2015/06/12/free-windows-10-is-a-noble-but-stupid-idea neowin.net/news/psa-windows-10-upgrade-is-only-free-in-the-first-year-if-you-have-a-valid-qualifying-license itworld.com/article/2921379/consumerization/windows-10-will-only-be-a-free-upgrade-for-the-first-year.html
My apologies in advance if this has been asked and answered in the thread already (if so, please include in the first post or page): 1) can you upgrade from Pro to Enterprise? (inside Windows 10) 2) can you upgrade from Pro (VOL_MAK) to Enterprise (VOL), possibly Enterprise LTSB? Thank you!
Sorry hope I am clear on this in both situations Enterprise is not in the via windows update path so your machine would not be automatically activated. This would only keep your old windows files on the root drive more or less like a clean installation Your machine would have a windows 10 Enterprise but can be activated by kms currently for 180 days or your own Enterprise key permanently if you have.
I have upgraded my Lenovo T400 from Win 8.1 to Win 10. Win 10 never booted up properly and went into infinite boot loop. I couldn't even boot into safe mode had to format the PC and did a clean install of Win 10. Just been chatting with MS help guy online to try to resolve the activation issue as obviously can't now activate the Win 10. He said the only way to activate is to do the upgrade which again doesn't work on my machine.... IDIOTS!! I do have a legit win 8 but MS leave me no other option than use KMS activator now...well done Satya Nadella.
LOL: I'm sure that was his intention all along You could try the upgrade process again (reinstall, upgrade), if it fails then now you know fore sure it won't work and can move on with your life. You could also, if you wanted to but sounds like you don't, buy Windows 10 outright and try to install it that way. Nothing to lose but time with option one, money with option two, or do nothing and stay as you are.
That's why Win10 is free at the moment. Any h/w or driver problems in source O/S get magnified in the Win10 upgrade. I'm not surprised at this story, and my Win10 test upgrades have now made me hold off for a year or so. This is the Vista sh*t all over again.
Any way to do a clean install without doing a clean install first? I have a valid win7 pro product key.
You mean upgrade? If so yeah, just buy a Windows 10 key and you're set. Otherwise, do the upgrade first, activate and then do a clean install.
@ginopilotino only have to perform the upgrade one time and never again. Win10 will activate without keys after that *ON THAT DEVICE* forever. Otherwise you need a valid Win10 key, it will not except 7 or 8 keys as valid. @drnoellyg, that is right. Keep spreading the word, maybe it will sink into the population eventually lol
For people still having doubts, I've just upgraded a VM with Windows 7 into 10, activated succesfully (W7 activated via Daz loader), then performed a clean install, skipped ALL the key prompts, auto activated succesfully. MS is f***ed, officially XD
Maybe my following query is dumb! Anyway, here goes... The scenario: ========== The hard disk of a win 8.1 Core (Home Edition) touchscreen notebook with an embedded OEM key has been wiped clean & win 7 Professional (with SP1) installed in its place. This was because the win 8.1 experience as a whole was found to be far from satisfactory. Win 7 Professional (with SP1) activation was successfully done using Daz loader. My question: ========== Will an upgrade to win 10 Professional from inside win 7 Professional (with SP1) result in a loss of the touchscreen functionality? I would be highly grateful if anyone can provide me with a definitive answer. Thanks a lot in advance. BTW I searched through every nook & cranny of MDL but failed to find a relevant answer.
Win10 and Win8.x are totally all about touch screens. Your system came with 8.1 core, and is touch screen. Odds are HIGHLY favorable it is more than compatible. If you cannot find info on your systems touch screen with Win10, and You didn't add what your system is, so its rather difficult to help search whether your system is compatible or not. I guess the best way to know is try and see. Make an image backup of your current install so you can go right back to it before you do anything. btw your scenario doesn't lead into your question lol. looks like 2 questions started and one finished
So my friend an I are Windows Insiders and have been running the preview builds for a few months. I'm sure at one point we both upgraded from our 8.1 installs, but also we've done clean install of preview builds along the way. My friend just did a clean install of the final 10240 build last week, but now it seems that it won't activate at all. The partial key is 3V66T, which I understand it to be the Windows 10 Pro generic key. He never put a product key in during the install, and he has signed in with his MSA, and accepted getting insider builds. Still no activation. The most I can get from running even a /ato from command prompt is that the key is blocked. Are there any other Windows insiders out there who are having this same problem? It's not really possible for my friend to go back to any 8.1 install either.
you could have upgraded, and still can upgrade to that 8.1 core-> win10 home Maybe image your 7 install, try the 8.1 -> 10 upgrade and see how things go. You got your image backups so toss the ole heave-ho at it. Takes less time to revert with a backup image than it does to install Win10, and really win10 install is pretty short. You only need run the setup and get into Windows 10 long enough to see if your touch works. If it does, go forward, if it doesn't, go back lol As long as your backup is an image and not just files and folders of course. Had one person insist they made a full backup of their system, turned out they saved their documents and pictures only. Just checkin
Hey, tell me, I have a laptop Samsung ATIV smart PC pro, it is one language for windows 8.1. I want to install Windows 10 about whether I can do this with a slick?
