Yes if you clean install without upgrading first - this is essential. See the bold text in my post mate... During the upgrade procedure UUID is stored @ MS servers - thereafter clean install to that same HW setup will activate at first connect.
OK. So I decided to give it a go. I extracted the x86 iso onto a 32GB MicroSD card and ran Setup (took about 30-45mins from time I ran Win10 setup to time Win10 asked me to connect to a WiFi). Overall the install/upgrade ran just fine until the end when it wanted me to connect to a WiFi. Come to find out the iView SupraPad 700QW is NOT Windows 10, and by that I mean the touch screen simply is all jacked up after upgrade and basically atm un-usable. Touch points are WAY WAY off (how can I re-calibrate it?). Luckily there is a Onscreen KB and I have a USB mouse to work with via a USB-OTG cable. Device Manager is clean of driver issues. Before I did the upgrade I did a Win8 refresh/clean/do not save anything. During Win10 Upgrade I chose not to save anything. Also when I press the power button once it goes to a blank screen but does not turn off the screen. Non of this is shocking by any means but I figured what the heck. Worst case scenario I figured I can hopefully extract the Win8 Key and do a fresh win8 reinstall? If that doesnt work then O well. I only paid like $35-40 about 4 months ago or so and only used the device for a maybe a weekend. I plan on playing with it a little more between now and the weekend to see if I can get it dialed in but if not then o well....$hit happens. Moral of the story is, If you have a iView SupraPad 700QW that came stock with Win8.1 w/bing DONT upgrade it to Windows 10. At least not yet. ~MC
Huih, that's a Wall . CoreConnected installed aka Bing(o) ... condolence. As long as the device is running get the key first, it's harder to do from live-boot-media. Afaik en-us Bing was available here.
just a small note, all you would need to do to get back to win8 is get a Win8 w/Bing iso and boot to it, it will get your Win8 key all by itself from the machine and install.
From my very brief test this device does not boot from USB-OTG and not sure if or how to change boot order. DOH!
I was able to get into the BIOS via USB KB by pressing the DEL key during post but there isnt any boot order options in there. Just options to boot uefi/shell and windows boot manager.
looks like you need a USB3 device formated to Fat32 and has to be bootable before it will show up. The reason for fat32 is because that is what UEFI supports, it does not support NTFS directly.
Well, this isn't some trivial bit at all and exactly what I wanted to be clarified as it contradicts what Microsoft stated: According to MS an Insider build will turn into an eval once you opt out, according to you Insiders get a free copy of Windows. I also have found no MS statement that explains why 10240 activated for everyone permanently thus giving an opportunity to at least some of a group of a few million to keep a permanently activated build - yes, people would avoid updates, this had been done by many in the past.
By this logic, if you upgrade to Windows 7 to Windows 10, you cannot do a fresh install on a replacement hard drive when it fails, since the hardware profile would have changed. Also, if I upgrade my CPU and motherboard, and do a fresh install (all the other components staying the same), I can no longer activate Windows 10. Is that right? If so, that's pretty absurd.
Also confirmed by me, I have activate Win10 with upgrade from win8.1. then installed a new SSD and install Win10, and this is result active.
@MrChris, 45mins isn't to bad, compared to some of the 'rants' I herd from friends. You didn't say if the tablet activated or not ? Or which SKU worked with Win8.1 w/Bing ? Was it Home or Single License, there a few other guys trying to deal with this point. Before you restore it back to Win8.1: Try removing the touch drivers form Device Manger, but DON'T uninstall the drivers. Reboot and let Windows find the drivers again. Or try updating the drivers for the touch screen (use HWID from device properties to search Google) Also do a full system reset, it could be just confused drivers. The blank screen is the power settings issue (Connected Standby) I've had lots of trouble with that on the Stream 7, I don't have a real answer for you on that one. Other than it fixes itself over time. Not sure if its an update that does it or it just works out what to do.
That quote is talking about Insider builds (beta software) that's time bombed, the build we are talking about here 10240 is (for want of a better term) RTM, which is NOT time bombed, therefore IF it activates its got to be permanent. The quote also points out that if you upgraded from a 'Genuine' (eligible for the free upgrade) version of Windows it will remain activated. If you did not, you'll have to go back to your old version of Windows or acquire a Windows 10. Again, Insider builds are Beta's and are Time Bombed i.e. Eval software. What I am saying is, if you use the RTM build which is NOT time bombed and it activates, that activation is permanent. It should be obvious to everyone here that the 'Free Upgrade' will only activate when done from an eligible version of Windows, therefore your not getting a 'Free Copy' of Windows. Your getting the 'Free Upgrade' your entitled too. I don't understand what your saying here But, MS is unlikely to make statements about 10240 being the 'RTM or Final' build until the 29th, as that's the release date. Which is when they'll go on all day about it. And yet again, IF 10240 activates on your device, you did the upgrade from an eligible version of Windows and your device was entitled to the 'Free Upgrade' Whether ten or a million people do it is relevant. If your talking about pirating, well that going to happen. For the last few months I've been laughing at all the people on this forum trying to work out 'How to Pirate a free version of Windows'
I don't understand. I thought I could install Windows 10 on top of my legit Windows 8.1, activate/register and then perform a clean installed on formatted SSD. However, OP says that you can only activate Windows 10 if you are an insider participant. So, there is no way to do what I want to do since I am NOT an insider participant? I have the OEM 10240 build - is it time bombed?
How and where do you check your new key? How do you know that it is only a preview key? Have you used Insider ISO or OEM ISO?
OK, people say that once you upgrade from legit Windows 7/8.1, then you can do clean install and skip key input because MS stored your PC info on their servers. I have Wi-Fi and during installation, it was not connected, even though now it says "Windows is activated". If I do a clean install, it won't be able to connect to Wi-Fi until installation is fully complete. Will Windows 10 activate properly after I login to my Wi-Fi network AFTER the installation?
^^ Still waiting for some maintenance routines to finish before I can wipe. Please report how it all went when you can connect again edit: There are several ways to check the key, just google it and the key I supplied. That's what I did.
