Basically whatever runs in x86 (32-bit) will run fine on a x64 (64-bit) system. Most drivers are already out there for everything; if not Microsoft has a good track record with Windows 7 of already having default device drivers readily available for anything installed. If the program is 32-bit it will run 32-bit. If the program is 64-bit it will run 64-bit. There's really no issues upgrading to 64-bit architecture. Your programs are going to run either way. I don't even use 64-bit Internet Explorer even though it's available. Really no reason too. I can't see me browsing something that's going to instantly take more than 4 gbs of memory.

It should go pretty flawlessly going from 32-bit to 64-bit. The only problem I encountered is that one of my printers is pretty old and the manufacturer actually never made a 64-bit driver for it. So I had to ditch that printer, but that's it.

Ok. Lots of very good info here. Thank u all. Nice to know about the printer issue too, cause I've got 3, 2 of them which are kinda old. Gonna look into that.

I'm sending this message from my laptop (remember my partitioning thread)? I've created a dual boot system with x64 Ultimate. It works amazingly! Didn't need any drivers, got connected to the wireless internet instantly! Good luck!

What are the basic advantages of X64 over X86?

Support for a lot more memory, and x64 apps will run a lot faster.
You'll be better equiped for the comming years also, as more and more software will become x64.

    @Genuine555

just open those arms and enjoy X64 bit. I have used it since Vista Ultimate X64 and it runs smoothly. Not problem whatsoever, and i do have a Nvidia board with GPU and no problem. You will enjoy it and for me, it runs smoother than X32. the only issue you might come tru is Antivirus, but there are many that can run like Karpensky and CA with no problem. I am using CA 2010 flawlessly

If I overlap my Win7 32 bit ultimate with Win7 Ultimate 64bit...will it cause any loss?
or do i need clean install?

and as far as i think...this is not the right time for going 64bit...may be after 6months..when there will be enough softwares available for X64...

my only piece of advice, make certain you have your network or wireless drivers handy on a stick so you can get other drivers, and check windows update for any missing or updated drivers

    Good Luck

    What do you mean overlap?
I am going X64 already, why bother reinstalling in six months, the same could be said for Win7 X86 anyways, why not wait six months for that as well?
At least in my opinion. You are of course entitled to yours, I am merely offering my point of view

He probably means an upgrade. The answer is NO.

You need to perform a clean install.

lol ya...actually I am already runnin X86, and before installing i did a small survey regarding tht...and found nthg special happens if u install x64, its jst u are updated MAN :)

anyway by overlap I mean...If I reinstall win7 by upgrading through X64 dvd over X86..
I already hv X86, and if I insert X64 dvd and click on UPGRADE while installation..then?
will it lead to loss of my c: files? or will it be jst like overlapping the previous version and everything remaining intact as it is,, like all softwares installed on c: and other documents stored..?

You cant upgrade from 32bit to 64 bit. You have to do a clean install.

Good luck with your move to x64, I've been using x64 since Vista came out in 2006 and I am very happy with it. I'm sure you won't have any issues.

Windows XP x64 was a little crappy, but they've fixed most of the problems since then. ;)

Anyone have any crashing issues? windows explorer keeps randomly shutting down, same with firefox. I don't know if it is driver incompatibilities or a bad install.

Look in the events view and see if you can get any info on what is going on.
