Still same problem. VM boots to black screen, I see mouse but no logon screen.
Can anyone please PM me a list of DISM commands, used to apply packages to Core 1709 build 16299 to bring working GUI? Am not asking how to get that MUM/CAT/CABs, but the list of what you add to make it working.

    Thanks!

    Tried two different ways:
    1) Apply the latest update to my VHD - still no logon screen
    2) Created a fresh VHD from Windows Server 1709 RTM ISO (no updates) and applied packages to VHD - without any updates. Getting the same black screen.

Can you please provide me a list of your DISM /add-package commands.

Great, thanks!! I was simply missing the Microsoft-Windows-Client-Features-Package00~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~10.0.16299.15,mum
Now it boots to UI and I can logon.

    New questions coming:
    1) First thing I see is my desktop, where wallpaper says "Windows Server 2016 Techincal Preview". Do I need to import some other licensing or branding file to get rid of that on boot?
    2) Remote Desktop Client (mstsc.exe) doesn't start, crashing. This one is very important for me, I would appreciate if you give an advice
    3) I did import the RSAT1708 cab. Do I need the RSAT1607 CAB also? mmc.exe doesn't see any server snap ins, which must be in RSAT 1709
    4) Don't see ServerManager, saw lot of small questions on this page, but no exact answer, how to add it?

    Thanks!

Do you know which files are used for Windows 10 "setup" process? I am thinking of convrting an old version to a "Preview" which uses "Official" Activation Technology, e.g. 15058 for 15063, and 16294 for 16299.

Can a method be used to let MS think you have been upgraded to not upgrade the high version?

    Yes, it's hard.

I am trying 16294 to see if 16299 update would be compatible.

It could receive 17115 preview, but not any update. So my thinking is right.

Without 16299 packages in WinSxS, the update won't install.

More and more close to the target, but the workload is too big, not too tired.

Not such a topic exists on the web, but RemoveWAT.

I believe they are wrapped in Features packages (System Core). Difficult - no stand-alone package.

As far as I understand, UUP is a ESD with certain packages (.MUM, .CAT, .MANIFEST, language files and binaries), WIM usually is for the full image of Windows installation

Have still a question for the main thread, as someone posted a reply and later deleted text, which I read from phone and wasn't repeat on PC, as answer was deleted already :(
There was some talk to apply "server settings" to VHD after adding packages. Anything more on topic?
