IMHO is best to match version otherwise you cannot update and is just a mess.

 

1. For Branding and Activation
10240 and 10586 belong to one group. Needing 10586 ServerHyperCore TP4 Branding, Editions and SPP packages.

2. For CU (Cumulative Update)
Now, the CU for 10240 is specific to EnterpriseS (Enterprise LTSB).

For SKU conversion, don't waste time on these old versions. RS4 and RS5 has changed.

And RS3/RS4 is just another 10586. Focus on RS5.
