    You need to create a dos startup disk and put zu.exe in that disk.

    Thanks to LatinMcG I was successfull in unlocking a password protected TOSHIBA hard disk drive, model MK2561GSYN, 250GB.
    I just followed the instructions, and the drive was unlocked in a couple of seconds.
    Before using this method, I tried almost everything and everywhere I was said that my hdd was not usable anymore, just good to be wasted!

    BUT THIS WAS NOT TRUE! I used this wonderful program (FOR FREE! Never give money to ask you for that!!!) and I had back my HDD PERFECTLY UNLOCKED with no efforts!

    THANKS again man for sharing this information with the community.

    I was so satisfied of this result that I decided to register on this forum to tell everybody that this method, simply, incredibly WORKS!

    welcome onchello im sure youll love this forum

    i just did a WD320BEVS from a dell laptop that would not work with zu.exe .. had to do it the manual way with MHDD 4.5 and dump the 22.bin then with HDAT2 i entered the pwd as i copied from the 22.bin in hex and it unlocked.. never saw what the actual password was.. showed funny characters.

    id love to get a pro to help us with the ones that zu.exe needs pcb disconnect or shorting tricks.. i burned one trying to find the short point lol

    Question. I am trying to run this on a laptop and when I turn it on the usb is not even getting the option to load the dos w/zu. It's just going straight to my all black p/w screen? The usb works without the hdd in so I know it's working but just can't get it to load before the p/w screen? Not sure if it will ruin the laptop if I first load the usb then insert the hdd..

    BTW.. if it's at all possible I would much rather just completely erase the drive and password without needing to know or clear the password if that possible? Any (free) programs out there to do that?

    Dear LatinMcG

    I'm from VN, It worked for me, buddy LatinMcG . My locked HDD is Western Digital WD1200BEVS 120 GB. Before i read your useful post, i tried too many method in my knowledge and found by google, but it didn't work. My HDD still locked. today i try again with google, and i found this topic, i follow your instruction and it worked perfectly. Many thank to you, LatinMcG.
    I've just registered this forum account for one big reason, that's say thank to you. and report to any bros who stuck with their HDD lock and want to take back their data. here what i'm done:

    - make an USB boot disk with Magic Boot Disk v2.0 Iso Image
    Code:
    h t t p://hddguru.com/download/software/Magic-Boot-Disk/Magic_Boot_Disk_ISO_v2.0.zip
    and YUMI – Multiboot USB Creator
    Code:
    h t t p://pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator
    (i do not have 20 posts to get permit to post link, please copy and paste manually, remove the blank in "http"), you can download from attach link above, and don't forget to copy ZU.exe (download from LatinMcG's link at #1 post) to USB disk's root folder.
    - go to bios and set Main--> IDE Configuration --> Onboard IDE Operate mode (set to Compatible Mode (need for MS-DOS), not set Enhanced Mode), go down 1 line and set Combined Mode Option to Primary P-ATA+S-ATA.
    - attach HDD to my ASUS P5GC-MX 1333 motherboard to sata2 port (in bios, it appear Fourth IDE Master)(there're 4 sata ports from sata1 to sata4 in my Motherboard, and you must attach to sata2 or sata4 port, see sata's port number on motherboard), disconnect all others hdd and CD-ROM.
    - set bios first boot from USB boot disk (in most case, must attach USB disk to computer first, and select proper USB boot device)
    - reboot into MS-DOS with USB boot disk, ignore the MHDD's instruction.
    - type at command prompt: c:
    - type zu.exe /s
    - and OLALA, just 2 seconds, can't bilieve in my eyes : DONE UNLOCK ! (or some thing like that, i don't remember exactly) :biggrin:
    - Congratulation, now your HDD Unlocked, and you can do anything to your HDD again. Don't forget to set your bios back to normal.

    Once again, I want to give a big thank to LatinMcG :drinks2:, who found this and give some useful instruction, and EFA11, un user, onchello , KACZUS@lagunabeachcomputer.com for your helpful, and big thank to [FONT=Verdana, Arial, Tahoma, Calibri, Geneva, sans-serif]Moltke@ihd.ru (like EFA11 said, I think he wrote useful zu.exe tool, if he did, he must be a hdd expert)[/FONT]

    Hope my post help someone.

    P/S: this is the post from KACZUS:

    Hi all,

    I've just registered in this forum so I can say thank you to all, especially to talentphan.

    So this is how I did it...

    How to unlock WD Hard Drive WD5000AVVS (500GB SATA)

    1) I created a bootable MS-DOS USB Startup Disk in Windows, using Rufus. The steps to do it are simple and well explained all over the web - pretty much just the press of a button or two;

    2) I copied the zu.exe file into the just created bootable MS-DOS USB Startup Disk (to the root) - you can find the file if you read this thread, or simply by googling for it;

    3) I connected the WD Hard Drive in my SATA 1 port, and changed SATA to Combined, instead of Enhanced mode - it was now my only drive, and was the Primary drive;

    4) I booted from the USB key, and executed the following command:
    zu /p

    Well... /P because I set my drive as the Primary drive... after about one second, I got the message that the Hard Drive was now unlocked. I powered off the computer, reconnected my hard drives, and booted into Windows - went to Disk Management and formated to NTFS and assigned a drive letter... simple!

    Once again... thank you very much!
