To start with have a look at the vista dvd you used and see if there is a folder in sources called $OEM$, also are you saying machine was activated then after a few days it isn't.
I didn't activate vista when I installed it on my computer, it didn't prompt me to. It only asked me to activate after a few days. I will look on the vista dvd.
