That's a new one - I've always needed to change IniFileMappings around a bit to get that to work, like so: Code: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\IniFileMappings\system.ini\boot] "Shell"="USR\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" But the latest operating system I've changed the shell on has been Windows 7 SP1. Maybe it's been fixed for 8?
Never. By default, it's a command prompt. However, the MSDaRT component of the Desktop Optimization Pack has a 90% functional Explorer window (associations are a bit strange, no shelll extensions of course, looks more Windows 98 than Windows 7...). 'tis nifty. No taskbar though. Alt+Tab is still my friend after all these years.
windows server 2012 used to boot directly into desktop in consumer preview build but in release preview it boots into start screen. microsoft removed option to boot directly to desktop in server 2012 release preview.
Server 2012 release preview??? This is RC. ...and the default view is the desktop. I'm using the Windows Server 2012 RC Datacenter Edition.
^^ release preview and rc are same things. i just read it somewhere that microsoft removed option for direct boot into desktop from server 2012. may be they kept it in rc but removed it from internal builds?
You're right, when the "Desktop Experience" feature is disabled (which is the default) Server 2012 boots to the desktop. With the feature enabled it acts like Windows 8 though and boots to the start screen. I've also read that it will no longer boot to the desktop in the final release, can't find a definitive source on that one though.
I just found out today from the Classic Shell forums I have been taking part in. A new version of Classic Shell has been released today,Classic Shell 3.5.1. And in this version you can now boot straight to the desktop,by passing the Metro start screen. Classic Shell 3.5.1 is the first start menu software that enables you to do this. Before you had to do a file edit and that only worked in Windows 8 CP. I have just upgraded to Classic Shell 3.5.1 and yes it works on Windows 8 RP and boots straight to my desktop. Also what else is new in this versions,is that now when you search your files,in the Windows XP start menu. You are taken to Windows Explorer like on Windows 7.Not the metro start menu, like you were in previous versions of Classic Shell. So install the new version of Classic Shell.Which gives you the start button and Windows XP and Windows 7 start menu. And boots straight to the desktop. Andrea Borman.
Why should they? The only way to get rid of all that stuff is to disable the entire desktop and find other ways to work with applications directly off the Metro screen. Considering e.g., that a control panel or an internet explorer is there twice, one on the desktop and one within the Metro area makes me feel like something is coming along and surprises us all. I, myself don't see any future in a desktop environment and to be honest, there is no need for it if you can start any software by clicking on a Metro icon.
