Go try and change anything in "Settings" as the actual administrator account. You can't. You can't access right-click display settings or personalisation either. No really, you literally can't even open "Settings". Because it's an "app". So the person who "owns" the machine has less access and control than the local users. Yeah. This is SO ready for release...
I saw some news about "Dell will ship new PC with Windows 10 starting 07/29". How they could write drivers, install Windows on new PCs and ship them in next month when Windows 10 wasn't finished
If anything, Windows 10 is more backwards-compatible than 8.1--I have nice, fully functioning drivers for all of my hardware... Drivers won't be a problem for Dell...but if they are for some reason (maybe in some of their laptops that are by-definition custom) it will be because Dell's been dragging its feet, and as sure as the weatherman is never more than half-right whenever he predicts rain--they'll blame Microsoft for it. But to reiterate Paul, it won't be Microsoft's fault--any more than it was with Vista--although to tell the truth I think the laptop OEMs aren't likely to ever pull that stunt again... Remember RTM isn't a brand-new OS...it's 10130 +++, more or less... And it isn't final, either, just because it is RTM. The only "final" operating systems that exist are the ones that Microsoft has EOL'ed and no longer supports...like Win3.1, WinXP, MS-DOS, AmigaDOS, Mac OS, etc. and so on. Those are the only "final" OSes (as in "finally dead" I suppose)...
I agree and I also noticed when I install on my Yoga2Pro all the weird Lenovo drivers you need for that machine were automatically installed by the windows install itself and with the Lenovo names..even required Lenovo apps were installed and I didn't have to add a thing, not a driver or an app so it's obvious the manufacturers are working closely with MS on the development of this.
Dell has access to builds, we don't and have been testing hardware\drivers throughout windows 10 development. It's not like dell is going to wait to RTM build to write drivers.
Windows 10 should be much more stable next week. While releasing a build, they are working on many other fixes at the same time and not every fix is in the next build because of testing. HP should work on Drivers too. They said they continue there work with Microsoft to get a better expirience with the HP Spectre x360. When RTM is released, I will wait for a few Feedbacks with clear install and will do it the same. Because with upgade, one build was very bad on my spectre. After doing a clear install on a pc or vmware, it runs much better. I will try to avoid Setting up everything before RTM will be released
They can patch every bug with an update. BUT The media, reviewers, potential customers in stores will test the "RTM" build that get's delivered at the end of July. There is a popular saying: "You don't get a second chance to make a first impression." The real issues here aren't the small bugs that will remain in the "final" version of Windows 10, but the potentially negative impact. Nobody will update their reviews of the OS 3 months later. It is very similar to the launch of the Surface RT (wich shipped with e preview version of Office RT) or the lauch of the Xbox One. Both products are great after many updates but still have a negative image in the mainstream media.
They realise the next build will have to be kind of 'semi-perfect'. Looks like there have been quite a few Impressive builds lately, probably trying to work towards that goal. Also, there is supposedly a new update system for insiders or something? It's not a wasted effort, since it will carry through the insider programme after Windows 10 release. Current Impressive build is 10154. We'd have to get a new one this week surely.
I've got good hopes for it. Build 10147 is a really great build, the next build we get is at least 10152 at this point, it's going to be alright for sure. Besides, we probably get a day-0 update, like we've had with Windows 8.1, 8, 7 and pretty much every other version of Windows. Also, as long as there is no RTM-branch, they are not done yet (the final builds in a development cycle tend to be make in a rtm branch like winblue_rtm, win8_rtm, win7_rtm, vista_rtm, etc. we've had in the past).
I tested 10047 last night and it was like a mess... seriously they have to polish a lot. This setting and control panel thing sucks so hard... I don't understand why you can't move desktops like in taskbar. I haven't found an option to select another wallpaper in themepacks (nothing special for technical guy but confusing for regular people) I coudn't remove a connection from people app/hub. only sync was an option (did it manually in registry [partners]) I saw several Errorboxes that disapeard within a secound. once after login, and another time while Windows Hello I think. And who the f**k is "defaultuser0"? I had a bug that titlebar of the apps where completely transparent... nice but huh? This was about 2-3 Hour testrun and my list could grow and grow. And this should be ready in just a week? omg.
