Thank you so much for this!!!!!!! I miss having the 'run' and 'search' typeable on my start bar, so bringing this back is great! thanks
Thank you, this also enables the customize button on the properties. I want to report to Microsoft that I (we?) prefer this startmenu but I can't find the Windows Feedback app, I'm using a local account, anyone knows if I need to be signed in for the app to show or maybe I removed and don't remember? :x
The new start menu aka continuum has a great concept, but the design and features fail to deliver compared to the old one, which had right click features, better tile design, and the sync wasn't as buggy as the new one, the new one barely syncs! I have a skype notification since hours ago and it still shows that one on the tile, very buggy, but I hope Microsoft fixes it and provides options for the old ones.

Not that this is major, but I discovered that disabling the 9926 start menu also disables Cortana. I haven't looked, but am wondering if there's a registry key anyone has come across that will reenable Cortana with the Xaml start menu...? Or, I suppose the key might be related to "search"...I don't care about Cortana but it's fun to play around with...
I discovered that disabling the 9926 start menu caused me to have to re-connect to the 'net every time I re-boot - "preview" software, what's not to love...
Since posting this, I have found a solution, at least for my machine. Conventional Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Connections: Wi-Fi (Name) - click on name - Wi-Fi Status Box opens - NAME Wirless Network Properties box opens - check "Connect Automatically when this network is in range".
Take a look at the date of this thread...way back in January...a few builds back. In 10074 the start menu is much better and fully resizable, too. Just unpin all of the tiles and you'll note that the sm now reduces to horizontal columns--no need for more than one column, though, as all of your programs can be accessed from the sm without having to remove your hand from the mouse...
The trick doesn't work on 100xx builds, btw the old menu (way better than the actual one, way worse than classic shell) is still there. Server 10074 has it, and explorer.exe is identical. So all you need is someone who find the correct registry setting to enable it.
It's already known that there will be significant changes to the Start Menu in some of the next official builds! Why not just wait for that and see what it will be all about?
... In Graphical User Interfaces there is no past or future, no modern or retro...it all boils down to what the user of the moment finds works best--it's 100% subjective and arbitrary. The more configurable a GUI is the better it will be liked because the more people will be able to comfortably use it. That's what a GUI is all about, imo. For instance, for me nothing can be uglier and more cumbersome and inelegant than a vertical/horizontal scrolling start screen. But I have no objection to anyone who prefers that monstrosity--they can use it to their heart's content. All I ask out of a GUI is that it doesn't force me to do the same--and Microsoft isn't doing that, which is the correct approach. One size does not fit all, etc.
wow thanks Dave!...oh lets go back in time.. see whos old "knock knock".. who is it? Its me man.. Dave. Dave? Daves not here man.. no man its me DAVE..Daves not here hehe
