There might be some hope in a week or so after all... a native w8 start menu solution. :)

Can't post links yet, so google for "Start8" from Stardock software.

I really don't know what to say about Metro, I need to use it for a longer time first. But it would be pretty easy for MS to improve it for non-touch use.

    - Reduce the margins, since the edges aren't important.
    - Icon size must be adjustable, just like you can change view in Explorer. Right now it's optimized for elbows. A column should be able to fit at least 30 apps (like the Start Menu).
    - Why so clean? Add the option for a clock, battery.. basically anything you can put in the task bar. Or, "Always show the Task bar on top of Metro".
    - How about a Recent column?

BTW my Desktop first tip from yesterday still works.

besides moving the file, will i need to run an addition command to reverse the command entered to point to the file.
    Code:
    schtasks.exe /create /tn "Windows Desktop" /xml "C:\Windows Desktop.xml" /f
I want to make sure I do not break anything by having both methods being there, even if one can only partially complete.

Once I have reversed that, I will give that method a try

This does not work for me on x64

Shows an error "Incorrect function 0x80070001".

I can create a link with the same program and arguements and that runs correctly.

Actually, I triad all version of shutdown and restart last night. It has stopped working all together. So I have removed the instance from starting.

In the meantime, I've extensively tested both Start8 and ViStart and am less then impressed. Start8 just uses Metro in a little bit smaller version, but the quick search feature is still divided into Apps, Settings and Files, which is annoying as hell - what just took typing 2 or 3 letters and hitting Enter in Win7 now still takes several keystrokes, arrow keys or mouse clicks, as with the standard Metro start screen, which is simply unacceptable. Besides, it's ugly as hell, just as the standard Metro screen, only a bit smaller.

The new Win8-compatible ViStart version looks a lot more promissing, it has the great look and feel of the Win7 start menu, it's small and neat. Unfortunately, there is no option (yet) to pin/unpin programs to/from the start menu, so apart from its cool looks it's useless.

Besides, I flatly REFUSE to use a dirty hack just to get back such a BASIC functionality as a start button, useable all-encompassing quick search, pinnability and a shutdown button... In addition, all the above solutions don't get rid of Metro.

Sinofsky, you mongrel bitch (to cite Shakespeare, mind you): give me back the cute, neat, long proven, useable Win7 start menu and let me choose whether I want use Metro or not, or else shove this unproductive monstrosity where the sun don't shine!
