Years ago, my wife worked at the General Electric small appliance warranty center. Radios, toasters, other G.E. small appliances. This was in the early 1980's before everything went to asia. She said the worst thing that would come in were the toasters (and this happened more than once) that when opened had roaches inside. Shudder. So next time you see a toaster at a flea market, I would keep walking.
Yup, we call those Roach Motels. Even if the original owner cleans the roaches out, the smell lingers. We bag those up after spraying them with Raid and trash em. Don't even try to salvage any parts from them. We find dead mice, bugs, pet urine from where the unit was kept on the ground and dogs peed on them and general filth.
You would be surprised where roaches go, toaster is the least of your worries. Don't let them get in your house, fumigate the soil outside too.
