You need to rename the .txt file you downloaded to end with .bat, so it can be executed. Don't rename any MSU file if the guide doesn't say it.
Hello, I've never commented here, but often visit this thread. I can confirm that this method doesn't work on Vista 32-bit if option 2 (patch as Server 2008) or option 3 (patch as Vista + Server 2008) is selected in step 22. Tested on real hardware, an error code 8007000e (out of memory) is displayed (DataStore patch is applied). When checking for updates, the memory usage goes up gradually. When it reaches ~95%, an error code shows and immediately almost all memory usage is gone. I have 4GB RAM. What I tried: classic theme, ReadyBoost, changing paging file to processes instead of programs. Result is the same. Option 1 (patch as Vista) works correctly.
It doesn't integrated in roll-up? Mean IE will not be updated then. I much saw example how is to windows 7 in server 2008 R2 mode ESU updates.
MatiHalek: The guide is created and is kept up-to-date by testing Vista 64-bit. It is also tested with a "normal" install of Vista. It is not tested with Vista 32-bit. It is not tested with a "virtual machine" install of Vista. If Vista 32-bit is used, or if a "virtual machine" install is done, I cannot comment on whatever issues occur.
Yes, x86 will not work https://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/restore-windows-update-for-vista.82336/page-17#post-1883162
I see need be separate. Is something here about how make finally IE and Net to automatic updates on Vista as Server 2008 ESU ? Without problematics.
There were no August 2025 IE9 CSU or SSU updates for Windows Server 2008 64-bit. There will be no changes to the guide in post #1.
Me interesting because last official netframework supported on server 2008 SP 2 is net 4.6.0. And that have esus normally on server. Someone tried how it work with Vista? Still need patched or scripted to install that? 4.6.2 up it is net for windows 7/server 2008 R2 up.
Ok now I see. But I try fight with serwer 2008 if situation is better than vista and can't turn TLS 1.2 still.
I encountered a problem when I was doing Step #18. I ran the script, command prompt closed quickly and no more output but three lines :"copied 1 file(s)", "package_2_for_kb5060996......" and "package_3_for_.......". The version of IE 9 is still RTM, but I can turn TLS 1.1 and 1.2 on. I read the script and searched for "ExtendedSecurityUpdateAI" using explorer, but there's no result. (This might help?) The script did extracted the .msu file but seemingly it didn't install it. My computer runs Windows Vista Enterprise with SP2 x64. I tried several times but result remains the same. Any solutions there?
I hadn't used Windows Update since I last did a complete test of the guide 3 months ago. I had 3 months of updates to install, so I fired up my Dell Precision M6800 test laptop earlier today to do it. The appropriate script tools were used for steps #18 (IE9 CSU) and #31 (MNF 4.6.2), and everything went fine. But I hit a roadblock when I ran Windows Update to obtain the latest SMQR. Error code 8024402F appeared and said Windows Update can't check for updates. I researched the error code and determined it's associated with a connection issue with Windows Update. The internet connection was working fine and allowed me to load websites, so I was puzzled. I manually downloaded the latest SMQR from the Microsoft Update Catalog site, then I manually installed it. Anyway, Windows Vista SP2 64-bit/Windows Server 2008 64-bit in my test laptop is now up to date to August 2025. There supposedly is 5 months left before all updates end for this operating system. Unless I change my mind, I don't plan to do another complete test of the guide until January 2026.
Thanks for making me aware of that. I also have Spectrum and have the 1 GB speed plan. I tried disabling the firewall and disabling the antivirus app and changing some DNS settings. The error code message still occurred.
About legacy update, without some updates it not work. Need that update windows6.0-kb4019204 windows6.0-kb4018271 after installation IE Later can try use for Vista.
By firewall/antivirus app do you mean Spectrum's "Safe Shield"? Disabling that fixed it for me. I had to wait a little while before it applied though.
I am pretty sure is this, To disable Spectrum's Security Shield, log in to the My Spectrum App, select "Services & Equipment" (or "Internet" depending on the app version), tap on your router, find the "Security Shield" setting, and toggle the feature off
After I read about Spectrum's security shield and everything it does, I decided not to disable it only for the purpose of resolving a Windows Update issue in Windows Vista. My install and update guide will be maintained for only a few more months, then I won't need to deal with that anymore. Windows Vista and Windows 7 are both reaching the end of the road in a few more months. Time and technology marches on, so I need to concentrate more on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
