If your machine runs Vista it would more than likely run Windows 7. Unless there is a special reason for wanting XP Install Windows 7. Thats what I would do.
The only problem there is the set of drivers. On older (Vista-era) machines XP will perform a way better than 7. Once I did the thing at my Dell Studio 1537 and it went on just like a darn cool hot rod!
get mobo model or device id of chips .. pci unknown devices in win.. or lspci in linux. sometimes a driverpack can pick an unstable driver and there goes the install. happens a lot with sound and wired/wireless lan chip.
