Thanks for the thought, but from what i can fine the compaq cards are made by Broadcom, where the one i have is made by Qualcomm Atheros

    still hunting.....

card works 100% under windows 7, so its a windows 8 issue i think...

ok, got it working now with driver for windows 7

    2009 Atheros Communications Inc.
    DriverVer = 07/08/2009,8.0.0.171

    :)

BTW don't Upgrade the 3.0.0.119 offered by windows update as it just causes the code 10 issues.....

My friend had this problem with a clean install of Windows 8 on a HP Pavilion Mediacenter PC with this WIFI chipset. Finally, a install of windows 7, followed by an upgrade to 8, it would not work. (same thing discussed here, code 10) device cannot start. Getting to the update driver and pick form a list of drivers, there were 2 listed there. They both had the same name. the first one on the list did the trick.

Ok hoping someone can help me here, as i have said i have now found the driver that works with windows 8 for the above wireless card. Now i injected the newly found working driver into install.wim, but when windows completes its install it ignours my driver and used the windows default which is driver 3.0.0.30 - whci is causeing the same errors as code 10. so was thinking about ussing this command to force windows to use my driver, not sure if i got it right though...

    Code:
    Dism.exe /image:%~dp0MOUNT /Add-Driver /Driver:"%~dp0wireless\netathr.INF" /ForceUnsigned
or is there a way to remove the windows default driver?

    UPDATED

Ok decided on this methiod, once install.wim is mounted ran this...

    RD /S /Q "C:\Windows8\MOUNT\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\netathr.inf_x86_f724590cb7e9eef8"

    DEL /F /S /Q /A "C:\Windows8\MOUNT\Windows\inf\netathr.inf"

    DEL /F /S /Q /A "C:\Windows8\MOUNT\Windows\inf\netathr.pnf"

    pause

I use a program called Driver Genius to get all of my drivers. Its $30 but it is well worth it. They update their databases very often to get you the newest driver for your version of Windows. Saved my ass alot of times for searching for drivers for Windows 8.

I use the Engineering Edition of Everest as well. Those HWVenderDetection has just the advantage that it didn't need to be installed and can also run from external devices. But, you're right, not a profi Apps.

Would you be able to provide your Hardware IDs from Device Manager for your WLAN card?

Some usb wifi adapters are less than $10 these days. It's a good work around to the issue. They are even "n" rated.

Why would you want an adapter when you have internal wireless? Thats like using an OTA antenna on a TV when you have FIOS, Cable, or Dish.

If you would read the thread, it does work. Its missing the driver. USB adapters are garbage.
