    Fatfishhk, Excellent guide sir.
    thanks

I just finished and it all seems ok
had to restore a few times until I got the sequence right
forgot to remove the optical drive, doh!!!
I'll probably end up buying an ex490 now I've seen the software up close

thanks to sebus and all the members that contributed to the thread.

Just found EX480 MSS v3.0 Recovery on Demonoid.

    What's the difference between EX470 and EX480 ?

My guess is EX480 got iStream.

The difference between the ex48x iso and the 47x iso as far as I am aware is ex48x installs (recovers or restores) to an sata sys drive where as the ex47x (which is the one that works for me) looks for IDE / Pata.
I could be wrong but for me the ex470 recovery worked on my IDE drive whereas the ex480 recovery DVD didn't want to know and blue screened at first boot.
As far as I know the 3.0 DVDs are the same apart from the drivers and supported hardware.

And it takes a couple of minutes with driveinject to correct the drivers
You can boot MSS on anything you want (raid 5? no problem)

Looks like I'm going to have to play with the drivers on the ex48x restore ISO. Blue screens immediately during the first windows bootup on my asus 785td V evo. Not so lucky this time around compared to my first attempt with the old setup.

It is likely that the BSoD is caused by intellppm.sys driver (as EX48x is based on Intel Celeron processor) if you happen to run the software on AMD processor.

Either change the Start to disabled 4 in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\intelppm

or just rename the intelppm.sys file to ie intelppm.bak

    Hi guys,

Please excuse me for posting this in this thread but I it's the only place I could think of.
So after testing out the mediasmart software I finally went ahead and got an EX495 (due to the celeron on the EX490 being a bit crap).
It's really great and I really recommend getting the hardware, if you can convince your other half. However, I have a little favour to ask if thats ok.
My server came installed with the french mss and with french recovery discs, which makes sense as it was purchased in France. Problem is I have all my machines in English and would really prefer to change the server language to my native tongue.
I've looked on the best2serve site but they only seem to have ex470 discs. The EX49x discs don't seem to be available anywhere officially yet. I haven't yet called HP but I will if all else fails. Even though I doubt they will be too helpful due to the nature of my issue.
So if you haven't guessed, my request is, does anyone know how I can get my hands on the english version of the recovery disc, or does anyone have the English EX49x recovery disc and can help me out.
From what i've read it would seem that it is not possible to change the language during recovery and the discs are single language only, hence my request.
    Cheers.

    Thanks sebus,
I already have both the 47x and 48x images and have successfully used the 47x image on non hp hardware.
Can you confirm the 47x or 48x image will work on a 49x?
I was under the impression the 49x series is a little different as far as oembios and drivers are concerned.
Also I read the recovery process is not the same, and as it is headless I won't be able to perform the same diags as on the non hp install.

    Cheers.

    v3 is for 48x/49x
oembios is ALWAYS the same (why would they change?)

Sebus dude you just made my day.

    Success!
Recovery over the top of the French OS using the ex48x disc worked.
The shares were still in French but some editing of the whs.reg and another recovery fixed that.
    Thanks sebus.

To resume, ex48x disc works to recover ex49x but not using factory reset option, in my case.
Issues so far are CPU temp is 33886c and esata port needs driver (windows update).

BTW if anyone wants the French EX49x discs let me know. But if it's for anything but a EX49x you'd be better off with the the ones from post 27 unless you are up for a challenge..

    Chile.

Inside the HP MediaSmart Server is a small USB drive used for recovery. Somehow, during several attemts to fix my server, it changed/removed files from this space and now the recovery tool does not even boot any more. Anyone know where I can get these files again? Or better yet, zip them up and e-mail them to me. Thanks

I am trying to fix my HP MediaSmart WHS Server. But the internal USB recovery thing is corrupted. I created a USB boot drive that works, but now I need the WHS_RECOVERY_SERVER.EXE . Where can I get it. Thanks

It should be on the whs system builders DVD that you can DL from MSDN or the partner site somewhere.
Otherwise I can find it on one of my backups if you are really stuck.
I'm sure google will give a couple of sources too.
I'd post some links but I don't have enough post count.

Hello: Great thread! It seems the link in post #27 for part 25 of v.3 (SnapEX47x-v3.part25.rar) is not working. Any chance someone could take a look?

    Thanks ahead of time,
